Colour Deficient Gaming

Guys,

I have a colour deficiency (red/green - Deuteranopia) and although I have had it since birth (Inherited) I haven't really noticed any real issues.

Are there any other members who are colour deficient, or totally colour blind (monochromatic)? If so tell us your story and how you deal with this!

I have one story - my first TV for Amiga was black & white but I saw most games with colors, just washed out. I was small kid and I think it was just very strong imagination. Best "colors" had Jim Power.

No I can see reds lol. I'm not blind, I'm deficient. Let me explain another way. The human eye can distinguish between 256 shades of red green and blue. I can't see all 256 shades of green. So any colours with shades of green I cannot see will appear as a different colour. Mine is extremely mild and someone I work with refuses to believe I have this issue.

So in the Dune 2 screenshot of the Map http://hol.abime.net/440/screenshot (image 16) I can see the Red at the top, blue on the left and green on the lower right!

I have the same problem, Daltonism. Red/Green like you. I can identify "pure" colors; green, red, etc, but when you start with small variations better don't ask me what color is it. Appart of this I don't find any problem, and it's also true I can see colors others can't, so I never would say like you "I'm deficient".

Ah, my uncle had this also, and he was a very good painter. He was publishing weekly in a magacine his drawings and he made lot of beautiful pictures.

Interesting how it's passed from mother to son. My 4 brothers all have normal vision so only one of her X chromosomes is affected and it's the one I inherited..

I also finding interesting how ignorant the world is to this. For example if you tell someone you are colour blind and they start asking what colour is this, and what about that etc..

I have Red Green colour deficiency. I struggle with red text on blue backgrounds. It all gets a bit surreal with a kind of blurry pseudo 3d effect.

Yeah I get that, but it's any of the vivd primary colours on top of one another..

Amiga CLI and WorkBench have blue background (but with white text so should be ok for everyone).

Some weeks ago I was trying changing the color of the background and text, and by mistake I used two very similar. I asked my wife if she could read the text and she said there was no text there. I could read it perfectly. It's like the testing drawings to know of what colour you are daltonic. In some drawings you see a number that a no daltonic person can't see; well, he sees another.

No, I changed it in some minutes, sorry. Try the test I've linked (edited).

AFAIK human is able to see more than 256 shades - count human eye in normal light conditions as 512 - 1024 and with some special conditions + training up to 4096 shades and overall dynamics can be even up to 1000000:1 - but normally we can distinguish approx 10 mln colors).

I have no documented vision difference however i found quite interesting to find that i don't like very strong blue light, my eyes are hurting (even tears) and my vision can be bit blurry (so i hate cars where dashboard is blue LED illuminated and those radios or strange AV equipment with bright blue lights).
Not sure if this is some medical problem or what else.

Interesting condition. Usually passed on the X-chromosome so males (XY) affected and women (who have 2 pairs of X) will be carriers. John Dalton, I believe reported this after realising that he suffered himself many years ago.

People can be effected to different severities. bippym - you any good with the Ishihara templates?

No. I fail the ishihara convincingly. It's weird because I'm only slightly out. I'm actually going to be training as an electrician from September

Some people can apparently live most of their lives with some degree of color blindness, without realising it. When you're born with some deficiency, your brain adapts to it and compensates for it to a high degree.

I just tried the Farnsworth Color Arrangement test from the link and my result was a circle without any crossings, so no mistakes. Also, I couldn't see the text in the first picture, even when I knew what it said..

Hi,
my first steps in computergames took place on a TI-99/4a with a b&w TV. I thought at the age of 13 that I can tell wich grayscale represents a certain colour.
I do have a light problem with red/green.
First time I discovered this was when I was 7-8 years old. It was a cover of a beloved book and there was a red writing on a turqoise background. The red writing seemed to be floating around in pure 3D.
