Autofire: Prohibited or Allowed?

It's not yet specified in the rules. I admit I used autofire for X-Out and Turrican.

I don't feel that's cheating (every joystick I had had an autofire-button or -switch).

But it should be definitely made clear in the rules if it's allowed or not.

What do you think?

Allow autofire! Some games (like X-Out) aren't really playable without it

In Turrican it's little harder to use secondary weapon with autofire on

That's why I have also single fire assigned to another button. My Dualshock-Layout for Turrican:

/\ - single fire (=> beam)
[] - autofie
X - jump
O - 2nd fire button (or SPACE)
R1 - ALT (=> grenades in Turrican I)

Here's what I wrote on the equivalent Lemon thread for those too lazy to check:

I suppose we could look at it on a game-by-game basis - i.e. you mentioned Datastorm, obviously if autofire is a power-up then you wouldn't be allowed to use autofire "normally" as it were. Or maybe to make it fair, you can only use autofire in emulation to the same extent you can use it on a real machine, so John's Turrican control layout on the EAB thread would be out, but standard autofire (i.e. like some Amiga joysticks have) would be legal.

Dunno.

Okay, let's sum it up :

Autofire is available as a power-up : Prohibited
Autofire not available : Allowed

What I find quite interesting is that john control layout is not allowed if I got it right

Cheers john Quite interesting discussion. I think the 'auto-fire is allowed as long as there's no auto-fire upgrade' is a good way to deal with it

Although I am yet to compete in the Games, I feel moved to say that there is no way to police / marshal such a ruling.

from this I would say that autofire should be allowed, even if you believe its a form of cheating.

The only thing would be to consider rules for games that could allow you to Score Farm, (i.e. sit back and blast it up to a high score without doing anything) but this comes down to another type of Game Exploitation.

its a tricky road to travel, my hope is that everyone whom competes is competing for the sake of the game and not the title of high scorer at any cost.

but in the spirit of the Games....

Yep, true, same as any other rule we enforce really, we just trust that people stick by the rules we set. Without that the whole thing would fall apart.
