Selling Amigas - best place?

What is the best place to sell Amigas etc? eBay? But what about cost of postage?

Depends on your goals
  • If you want to get the absolute best price or if you'd just like to see your Amiga live on.
  • If you're ok with posting and packaging and managing with complaints / returns.
  • If you are happy to use pay-pal or some other online payment mechanism.
  • eBay - Best price, must have pay pal account allow a 3rd party to hold funds, a good 10% taken in fees, 99% postage required (or lower price), be prepared to deal with returns.
  • AmiBay - Biggest dedicated audience, must choose price up front, awkward selling practices must be followed.
  • Facebook Groups - No fees, still have to post, international buyers are usually scams.
  • Facebook Market Place - Local collection, no posting, cash in hand. Lowest audience. Potentially lower price (but you set price).
  • EAB - Everyone will moan about the price but secretly PM you.

Yes, they transfer the money directly to bank account. I also have lots of Amiga and classic Macintosh gear, that no longer use or need, for sale, but I am always scared to sell on eBay because the high fees, danger of shipping damages and sometimes scammers. So I prefer selling locally with people coming for local pick-up, even if the prices are not that high.

You still need to use a 3rd party to hold the funds until the sale has completed correct? You don't get the money then ship the item as you might expect.

eBay holds the money. You ship and if everything is okay, they release and transfer you the money after a period, depending on your account status (age, rating, etc...).

What does it mean "if everything is ok"? After the buyer says so? (I haven't used ebay in quite a few years so I'm curious).

If the buyer doesn't raise a dispute or wants a return/refund.

Last year I bought on eBay a Sega Saturn from Italy. It doesn't came in two months, so I asked the seller where it is. He wasn't able to track and I missed the 40 days dispute period, so I wasn't able to raise dispute/ask for refund. Hopefully the parcel came in a week after. I asked the post why so slow, and they answered the parcel actually came pretty fast for the Italian posts.

Having this in mind for the next parcel from Italy, I ordered local freight transport company to pick it up from address and it came in only two weeks.

The thing with eBay, is a lot depends on your performance when it comes to selling & them releasing the funds you have acquired for selling through them.

My point towards eBay was that a PayPal account is no longer needed. Just add a Debit card or other permissible card type to your eBay account & you're good to go. (if you want to get fux0rd with extortionate charges of course) & they know it!
They recently jumped on Vinted's band waggon by not making charges for clothes transactions!

Roll eyes (sarcastic)

Update on my eBay experiences:
You can get scammed there not only by buyers, but by eBay itself. They made me the scheduled monthly payment some days ago, only to block my account and my last month earnings the very next day. Now they ask me to provide them with invoices and receipts for ALL the items that I've sold and have listed. This will take me weeks or even months to find all the documents and receipts. I've tried by sending them some bank statements and receipts for the easy to acquire, but they said it's not enough. The want receipts for ALL!

Of course I still can buy items (so they can earn theirs commission) and even had a sale (don't know how it happened if my account is restricted and funds blocked), which got cancelled by the buyer (fortunately).

I opened a ticked asking if I shall kiss my money goodbye, to which they didn't answer.

Not sure what will happen with the blocked funds. I've read that they will release them in 6 months, other posts say they transfer the money to the federal reserve.

Whatever, people shall be careful selling there.

That's odd, I'm sure I've always not posted anything until I've received the money on Ebay...

Maybe it's different in the UK?

Yes, in the UK at least, you get the money in your bank account overnight regardless of whether you've even posted it.
