Floppy disk Very old damaged EA/Activision game disks (1985/1986): looking for ADF replacement...

I just got some very old EA games from Canada .

It is a nice collection and there are some games included I was realy missing.

Now I own Archon I, Hacker I and One on One in optical very good condition but the disks are all unreadable.

Searching for some "replacement" ADFs to copy on these disks I found a lot but I did not find a single working version for Archon I, Hacker I or One on One.

I tested the ADFs first on blank disks with my A1000 Kick1.1/1.2 and later with WinUAE as I thought I have a PAL Problem with the NTSC (only ?) releases.

I read here :http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?...ghlight=hacker
about a Hacker 1 release.

Is anybody out here who can upload a working copy of:

-Archon I
-Hacker I
-One on One (EA version from 1985)

I´m not looking for these complation disk with "Archon I+ One on One + Archon II".
As I have the "Archon Collection" too it would be great to have these old first release Archon I version because the Archon I from the AC is different and needs more than 512 KB RAM to start without crash and has a different loader.
Anyway I was unable to copy the Archon I from the AC.

I only want one single game on each disk.
If your version is without Cracker Intro it would be even better because the destination is the orignal Floppy disk or at least the original floppy disk cover.

I also need a working copy of

-"Mind Shadow"
-Arctic Fox

which are also damaged as I found out yesterday (don´t know if there is a working ADF out)

Please help me.

Best reagrds Hacky

You can get the IPF versions of these titles my doing a simple search. Search for Game name, IPF and/or SMS and you should find both archons. Not sure about one on one.

Unfortunately all available "single" versions in TOSEC are bad

I don't really see the point of copying something else onto the original disk. Better to keep the original write-protected and not write to it (even if you can't recover anything from it now). It would always be quite obvious that the disk has been written over. And whatever you write would be likely to be a cracked/hacked version.

Anyway, I recently received Archon 1, Archon 2, Skyfox and a couple of other EA original disks (Financial Cookbook etc. :). I still need to check whether they are readable -- at least the Financial Cookbook one is -- but if so I'll try to create image files. The originals are probably copy-protected, in which case normal ADF files won't be sufficient. However a utility like WWarp probably would be capable of reading/writing them, with the correct arguments.

Finaly I was able to get a lot of the originals to work and did some successful copys with the NIB 2.0 Parameter Copy (released 1989).
Cleaning with Isopropanol AND drying (first I did not wait long enough) was the solution.

-Mind Shadow has still some Read/write problems (not allways but mostly)
-One on One is not working and needs a replacement

-Arcticfox is not working but I´m not sure maybe I have a PAL Problem (I have no NTSC machine for testing).

I have now "clean" working original US disks of:

Achon I
Archon II
Marble Madness
Hacker I
Return to Atlantis
Skyfox

....

<snip> has ADFs of most games - more than I've ever seen in a single location.

If you haven't written over your original disks yet, try TransDisk and a serial cable to move them to a PC and ADF them at the same time. I had some disks with read errors that DiskSalv and like utilities couldn't save, and using TransADF to ADF them on the Amiga would just quit before finished. When using Transdisk to move a bunch of disks over to the PC, I tried the bad disks just on a whim. They copied over alright and so far seem to be fine in UAE. Transdisk must use some kind of low level raw read.

Could you write a bit about how exactly you cleaned the disks, and whether their surfaces appeared to have any visible defects/markings/dirt on? I have a few disks that seem to have patches of mould (or something like that) growing on the surface, and am wondering whether cleaning might help to revive them.

It works for disks with dirt, I suggest to do this before your try your disks.
If you test dirty disks in your drive these disk might get damage/scratches.

Isopropanol is great for cleaning disks before the disks are realy damaged but you have to wait until the disk is dry (especialy all the stuff inside the floppy cover). If the disk is wet it will not run at the right RPM (to slow).

Haven't tested it personally but the only version in TOSEC is marked with a [b] flag

Hacker (1985)(Activision)[b].adf

There's a thread posted above but it doesn't really go into details: Hacker 1 & Iron Hand
