A bit of a plea for this game's WHDload-ification...

I played the sequel to this game - Alternate Reality: The Dungeon - on my Commodore 64 all through junior high and high school. It really set the definition for computer RPGs for me and even the most modern RPGs I bother to play are weighed against The Dungeon.

This game - The City - exists on the Commodore 64, too, but it was a rushed and unfinished port. It's hard to really even make myself play it because I know it's supposed to be much better than it is. The C64 version doesn't even have intro music. By contrast, the Apple II and Atari 8-bit versions were considered completed, but they reserved one of the most important features for the 16-bit versions, the ability to join guilds. And the intro music on the Amiga sounds spectacular! The music composer did a great job on The Dungeon's music on the Commodore 64 so I am really interested in hearing the Amiga version music playing on my very own Amiga.

I don't mind the idea of playing on floppy, but I've heard that this game is one of those old-school picky games that simply won't run on anything but a stock A500 with 1MB of chip mem, whereas I have an A1200. If I have to, I'll resort to emulation. But it would be fantastic if there was any chance of a WHDload-friendly version.

I agree, a WHDLoad version would be great.

By the way has anyone ever cracked the encryption on the saved games yet?

I would definitely like to see a WHDLoad version of this. I originally played it and The Dungeon on an Apple //c in college back in the day.

Makes me wonder how it all would have panned out, gameplay-wise, had the remaining 5 planned Alternate Reality games ever saw the light of day. I see on Wikipedia the outline for the entire run, but so much can change when it comes to actual implementation. Certainly too many cases of this over the decades.
