Heh, or press play button on the mp3 player or mobile phone in your pocket

I don't think that's the topic here though...

I'm a bit late to this thread, I really liked the music for 'Lightshaft' and 'we come in peace' by Elude. To my surprise play16 handles them just fine.

So iv'e been converting a load of mp3's to ADPCM4 using 'quick media converter', (adpcm_ms, 230kbs, 27400khz, stereo) the quality is pretty good, and takes about 10 seconds per song.

UAE set to cycle exact A1200 plays them ok but nothing else other than Play16 seems to handle them. Does anyone know of any other players that will handle them? Deli, Hippo and Eagle don't seem to? (there are ADPCM players, but seem to be mono).

File sizes seem slightly smaller than their MP3 equivelents, and can be packed further, which is nice.

I've also heard that in a double scan mode, you can get 56kz, does AHI/Play16 support this as standard?

Want good quality audio? Convert something CD quality to 28 kilohertz stereo 16 bit WAV, using software that down samples properly (SOX for Windows), and play back using a player that doesn't need AHI, and use a proper calibration file (Hippo player). Almost sounds fantastic (very good)

Make sure you use proper software for the down sampling, or the quality will suffer.

Probably won't work well on non-accelerated Amigas, though. It would be nice if this kind of audio could be stored in a native format without loss...

Run dblscan modes and youll unlock upto 56k audio. So if your running a suitably amiga you shouldnt have to down convert anything. Just run the ripped wav or cdda file through favorate sampleplayer and it should sound as good as the native amiga sound can be.

I used to use YACDP on my Amiga A600 to play cd audio over scsi. Couldnt do much else at the same time, but it sounded pretty good.

But nobody here is going to talk about SongPlayer (last version of Aminet)? I`ve got now an ACA 1230/56 and I`ve converted the mp3 to aiff, and have changed the look using SongFace on Aminet. The sound is reeeeally great, and with SongFace you`ve got it almost ready setted (I`ve only changed AHI to 14bit stereo++ calibrated). Comparing the scope even, it runs much better that the one of AmigaAmp did with my B1260; it runs on real time, and what`s more, you can open other programs while you listen to the music.

Have a look at Play16 documentation and all you questions should be answered. No need to lower sampling frequence to <28kHz. Also (already mentioned) SongPlayer (very good) should play ADPCM 4 (see docs). Maybe someone is interested in FLAC (lossless compression up to about 50%). Unfortunately I only know vorbis-tools for playback FLAC. AHIRecord (watch out for next release) can record "into" FLAC but needs fast CPU.

Hmm, I wonder if it would be possible to have unused scanlines/overscan area on a normal workbench running scandoubled, and providing 56khz playback, while the workbench runs in a normal mode? (I guess sort of like when you drag A pal screen down to show another resolution running?)

@daxb & retrofan thanks,for the info guys!

If you have AHI installed you might have a look at "AddAudioModes dblscan" (see AHI docs). It open/close a double-scan screen for >28kHz.

interesting, so this works even if you don't have a dblscan capable display device?

Hey Guys you can play them in Stereo too.
To play your favorite "MP3" on your normal Amiga 500 Kick 1.3 Workbench 1.3
you shold either have a hard disk or a CD-Rom Drive (A570) or an Amiga CDTV.

To convert your MP3 you need the PC Tools Goldwave (just search for it at vuze) and the freeware tool SoX (http://sox.sourceforge.net/)

To play your music (IFF or 8SVX) on the Amiga you need DSound 1.50:
http://aminet.net/package/mus/play/DSound150

*)First take your favorite MP3 (great place for Amiga Music: http://www.amigaremix.com/remixes/sort/rating/up)

*)Load this MP3 on the PC with Goldwave and save it as an 8bit stereo WAV file.

*)Now copy this file in your sox folder. Go on Windows into the Dos Mode Start -> run cmd
(for example your music is named test.wav)
and type in dos mode
sox test.wav test1.wav rate 14k

Now you have a 8 bit stereo wav file with 14KHz!

*)Again run Goldwave and load your 14KHz stereo wav you just converted with sox.
Save it now as Amiga 8 bit Stereo iff!

*)Now transfer the file (i tested it with daxx - Budbrain Coloris - daxx Remix.mp3) to your amiga.

You can create an own button in Directory Opus (4.12) for DSound or you can play it directly from shell.

In shell type: dsound -s28000 test1.iff

For Directory Opus use these settings:
AmigaDOS SYS:PathwhereyouhaveDsound/DSound -s28000 {f}
Flags: CD source, Run asynchronously

Now pump up the volume and enjoy yor "MP3"s in best possible stereo quality on your stock Amiga 500!!!

Best regards from Austria,
Reini

PS: If you might find it interessting, I have described a way to burn a bootable Workbench 1.3 CD for Emulator or real Amiga 500 with A570 or CDTV here:
http://www.german-amiga-community.de...ic.php?t=14145
Don't use MakeCD for creating an ISO!

Sorry, but that is really complicate. Just save a mp3 as wav/aiff/8svx/... (umcompressed) and play it with a player you like (I guess all ModPlayer can do. HippoPlayer, Play16, ...). Have a look into Play16.doc and correct your post.

But... if you want maximum quality without double scan modes, then you have to convert to 28khz stereo 16bit wavs using something like SOX on the peecee. Don't rely on a players ability to down sample in high quality (written for speed), because it most certainly won't match SOX's great quality.

Yes, of course you can do whatever you want with the mp3 loaded. I only want to make clear that you just have to load a mp3 and save (with your own settings) it. There are hundred of possibilities doing that. Why not choose an easy one. However, if you choose lesser frequence I would check 22050 Hz against 28kHz if the source is 44100 Hz.

With >=68020 you can use 14-bit CyberSound driver for "better" quality.

Why not choose the one that sounds best?

28 Khz is better.

Calibration reduces the noisiness of the soft parts of music, so it does in fact improve.

You can choose the sound quality you want. For best quality don`t convert, but that isn`t the topic here. However, it is a bit stupid talking about quality because it is subjective and converting (to lower specs) reduces them.

Hi daxb!
You are right, Play16 1.8 is a great tool to play wavs on 68000 Amigas but Play16 requires >= Workbench 2.04 / Kickstart 2.04.
Play16 does not work on Workbench 1.3.
On an stock Commodore Amiga 500 with Kickstart 1.3 and Workbench 1.3 DSound150 is one of the few tools to play IFF/8SVX up to 28KHz (mono) 14KHz (stereo).

My 1200 can't, it's very stuttery. Maybe the sound converter wasn't very good. Any linux recommendations for ffmpeg options to achieve ADP4 or WAV?

A quote from Play16.doc by Thomas Wenzel:
Quote:
Anyway, an Amiga 3000-16MHz is fast enough to play an uncompressed soundfile with full 44.1kHz/14bit output (productivity) directly from harddisk !!!
So I would a least try Play16 to play a WAV or whatever uncompressed format. It should really go well.

Right you are! I had to copy it from the network samba share to the Amiga's HD. It's a good solution for minimal conversion.

Does ADPCM 4 hold any advantages over WAV?
