you have to use a 2,5 -> 3,5 Cable ... You can buy one, or make one yourself (a lot of soldering though...)

In order to get a standard 3.5" drive into an A1200 you'll need the cable kriz mentioned,

and a floppy power cable splitter,

and you may have to cut some of the IO metal shielding in order to get it to fit.

Plus it strains the standard A1200 PSU, but it should work if you get to this stage.

You can get slim 3.5" drives that don't require cutting the IO metal shield, but I doubt you have one of these rare models.

Personally, I'd forget about all the above and buy a cheap second hand 2.5" drive from e-bay, making sure it comes with the required 44 pin cable. It'll fit easily in the A1200, will be powered from the cable and won't strain the standard PSU. After all, that's what the A1200 was designed to use.

PS - if you don't have a cradle inside your A1200 to hold the 2.5" drive, you might need some insulating tape on the bottom of the hard drive to stop it shorting on the metal shield. Plus some sponge in order to hold it in place. Be inventive, just like Design&Technology at school if they still have that in the curriculum.

All you need now then is the correct 2.5" 40 pin cable and you're in business. Time to go searching.

What the hell am I on about. I'm really losing it today. The 44pin cable is for 2.5" drives, while the 40 is the standard 3.5" connector.

Are you saying the 44 pin cable you have won't work?

Make sure the cable orientation is correct, the drive is set to master and once you hear the drive spin up you'll need to load HDtoolbox found on the workbench disks in order to get it ready for use. Do a search on the net or in these forums and if you're still stuck post back here.

Yep and you said you've tried a 44pin 2.5" laptop hard drive cable, which should work fine. When you connect the cable between the A1200 and hard drive and turn on the power, does the drive spinup?

Have you got a cradle to hold the hard drive in the A1200?

Need some detailed info in order to help.

Only momentarily.

In your first post, you said you've tried a 44 pin cable. That's a 2.5" harddrive cable. My only error was in my second post where I mentioned a 40 pin cable; I meant to say 44 pin.

You're confusing the situation by making very short, detail-free posts. I'm willing to help you but you have to provide accurate and detailed posts.

Right, let's get a few things straight:

Laptop Harddrive (one on the left in pic):

Size: 2.5"
Cable: 44 pin

Standard PC hard drive (one on the right in pic):

Size:3.5"
Cable: 40 pin

A1200 motherboard:

44 pin connector

If you've only got a 40 pin cable, and you're using the laptop harddrive, then you'll need a 44 pin cable. I'm sorry to sound condescending but your posts are so short.
