A1200 Power connector issue.

Turned on my A1200 today to find it powerd on but wouldn't boot, either from floppy or internal CF Card as the HDD light just stays on?

Found if I pressed down on the plug that goes in to the power socket then it boots but as soon as the pressure is removed the amiga just 'pauses' until you press down on the connector again!!

I stripped the A1200 down and looked at the board but there is no indication of dry joints or pins coming loose where the power connector is soldered as it's solid on the board, moving it left/right and up/down doesn't reveal any loose solder or pins? Tried my A500 PSU and the same thing happens, need to push down on the plug to get it to boot

Is this a common problem? Does it need a new connector soldering on the board or is there a 'fix'?

if your having to press on the plug? then it could be a few things you could have a bent pin, bad solder joints(i think you checked this one) socket pins are loose(spread apart slitely(it looks like a prong)) or youve got a broken wire in the lead.

Think it's more the connector on the A1200 roy as I've got the same issue using the A1200 PSU and also using my A500 PSU in the A1200. I'll check the connector and see if I can bend the prongs in as they may be sprained.

thats a good idea, erm, try a pin and push it in either side of the prongs in the socket to lever them back into place.
if they are bent you should be able see if they are close up.

good luck,if you cant do it and have no luck and you need another socket ive got some spares so i can let you have one.of course youll need to be able to desolder the old one.

Thanks roy. I was wondering what to use so as you said I used a safety pin and slid it down each slot and bent each pin inwards and, touch wood, it's booting without pressing down on the plug! Will keep my eye on it and if it starts doing the same again I'll take you up on the connector.

One question about the power connector, is it soldered on just the one side of the board or both? I've managed to change some laptop DC jacks previously and those swines are soldered both sides of the board!!

there only soldered down on the underneath of the motherboard,i'll take a picture of a desoldered one for reference for you now.

as you can see it might be a bit of a game without a rework station.

Well, I've got a desoldering iron (built in pump) and some desolder braid so it shouldn't be a problem if I need to replace it. Are the 3 pins at the front connected to anything? When I checked my connector there was a sliver of solder from one of the outer pins just touching the middle pin so I trimmed it with a scalpel, is it just earthing or just for stability?

Thanks for the pic

the three at the front are actually one connector, its just the sheilding nothing to worry about.

i would humbly suggest flux paste its great for this type of work, and clear the holes with a solder pump
