WinUAE running @ 20fps with stuttering sound
PC spec is Dual core AMD Opteron @ 2Ghz with 2GB of RAM.
Even running something like WorldOfCommodore, fps is in the 20-30 range. Bottom of UAE screen says SND: -164% CPU: 0% FPS: 29.4. With windows task manager open, UAE is apparently using 19% of the processor, and complete processor utilization is 21%. System idle 75%. GFX: NVidia 7800 GT SFX: Creative SB X-Fi This is a desktop PC, not a note/lap/netbook. Oh, and the WinUAE configuration is the default, so that'll be A500 speeds, right? Any ideas? |

Hi Moose and welcome to EAB.
Please include both logs for Toni. You activate it on the 'Miscellaneous' panel. Also please use the A500 most common quickstart for that. |

Here you go. I deleted the directory and reinstalled (extracted the zip file) first. Still the same problem.
This is version 1.6.1 Last edited by Moose; 31 August 2009 at 17:33. |

Dual core AMDs may have problem with power saving features, make sure you have latest bios and try also disabling Cool&Quiet feature in bios. (to confirm if this is power saving problem, this is not a proper fix)

Hmmm, I found an old version of WinUAE - 1.2.0. It works without problems at the full frame rate and perfect sound.
Here's the log files for this version just in case it helps. |

Hi Toni,
Thanks for the suggestion. Before I try it however, would that affect older versions too, or is there some new code in later versions that tries to be more "compliant" ? |

is the performance timer used by WinUAE? It might be the dual core AMD "bug" in combination with it. I know there is a firmware fix for it somewhere on the AMD website.

BIOS/driver bug that causes performance timers to stop or change speed very randomly. (like enabling "too deep sleep" too quickly or something..) |

Disabling cool n quiet in the BIOS will probably work as well.

I've had time to try WinUAE 1.4 & WinUAE1.5 tonight and both work fine, although the CPU usage monitor at the bottom of the screen reports nearly double the value that 1.2 reports. Not sure how thats calculated.
so. 1.2 - OK 1.4 - OK 1.5 - OK 1.6 - Jerky. Does WinUAE have a public CVS? I checked and I do have the AMD "patch" installed. Not sure if it's doing anything, but it seems to be installed and I've not had problems with any other software. |

Go to the WinUAE display settings and choose "Fullscreen" (WITHOUT "VSync"!) or "Windowed" mode.
Then try again. Ciao, Rick ... |

I had the same problem. I run Task Manager and change "Affinity settings" (I don't know how it is called in the English version of Windows) for winuae.exe to CPU 1 only. Then it works perfectly!
