The amazing difference between a 1084S and LCD screens...
I'll have to take a picture later and post this, but I was playing Hudson Hawk last night, and currently I have a zz9000 with the video slot pass through and the standard RGB output to a 1084S screen at the same time.
The colors on the 1084S just look SO much better, or it's the lack of scan lines, or.. not sure, but the game seriously looks more phenomenal on the original screen. Colors seem more faded, or rigid.. hard to explain on the LCD (A Dell U2410 in this case). I have several monitors hooked up to the system at this point (due to the video toaster), but I'll see about the one that I have that is 4:3 and compare it to the CRT one. Which brings up the question of different options for the zz9000, would be nice if it had a scanline feature like the Indivisions do. |

Scanlines rule (hardware or software)
I couldn't imagine playing anything retro without them. |

The Amiga looks only good on LCDs in higher resolution stuff like the WB or apps. Lores games = CRT. There is no way around. The scanlines feature in hardware like the Indivision or OSSC doesn't look real enough. Emulators though can give you the proper CRT mask illlusion via shader.

Those images are taken on an emulator with CRT like shaders / filters; no?

I didn't like scaneline/CRT effects untill I got an OSSC and I have got to say that the effects look great on my LCD screen.

I just realised that my CRT displays vertical scanlines !
Here's a HAM6 pic on my A600 on which we can see the vertical scanlines on the left (since the pic is a bit blurry on the right). |

I can see Britannica (or any other dictionary) have following description for scanlines:
Scanlines - an option in emulators to turn perfect picture in miserable dark garbage... |

Couldn't agree more, and CRTs also display beautifully crisp and smooth motion, unlike all flat screens. For hires graphics and static content small fonts look sharper on LCDs.

Anyway, yes, CRTs are vastly superior in picture quality to LCDs at anything other than native resolution, and even there LCDs mostly win out on non-picture aspects like footprint and power consumption. |

Scanlines SUCK, I just don't get why people of around my age have such a hard-on for them.
In the Poltergeist remake a few years ago, they took a giant LCD screen, scanline-free, and ARTIFICIALLY added them, to convey the retro look they were going for, based on the original TV attracting the ghosts being a CRT. It just looked so cringe-worthily bad that it broke the suspension of disbelief for me, for a supposedly 21st Century version of the story! Maybe that's why it bombed? When you look at scanlines on an old CRT, you're seeing them projected through a combined filter of electrons fired through a cathode ray tube, phosphor dots AND a metallic shadow mask, which limits what light is let through. In a modern LCD display, the liquid crystals control how much light is let through, but aside from that, the light is purer, less limited, and at least the pixels are absolute, not the muddy mess that CRTs are. And I think the best displays of all are OLED/AMOLED, which generate their own light via concise, tiny pixels and produce the cleanest, brightest images and the blackest blacks, because there, literally no light is being created to be filtered in the first place. CRT scanline screen lovers, compare your beloved primitive screens to an OLED screen for Amiga graphics, and tell me which display tech you love best. And don't be nostalgic, neither - move with the times! |

This is one opinion, and it's YOUR opinion. Amiga Lores games on an 4K UHD TV is horrible (i tried that with my A1200), unless you emulate and use some nice CRT shaders.
