there is a amitcp faq, which gives some details about cannot open bdsocket.library.
when they write "workbench:rexxc" it is the same as sys:rexxc
Quote:
8.12: When I try and run an internet application (or a command from
AmiTCP), I get the error message "Cannot open bsdsocket.library". How do I
fix this (thanks to Scott Norton).

First, you must understand that "bsdsocket.library" is a library that is
created within the operating system by the AmiTCP program. It is not
loaded from LIBS: and it is not a separate file. So, if you get the
message that a program can not open bsdsocket.library, that means that
AmiTCP is not running. It may have failed to load, or may have been
unloaded.

Another possibility is that in the startnet command file, the command
"WaitForPort AMITCP" didn't run. In startnet, right after the command "run
AmiTCP:AmiTCP" is the WaitForPort command, which ensures that AmiTCP can
finish setting up before the script goes on. If you don't have
Workbench:Rexxc in your search path, or don't have the file WaitForPort,
that command might fail, and the script will charge ahead, and execute a
command before AmiTCP has created bsdsocket.library (See the FAQ about
WaitForPort for more information on WaitForPort.)

Interesting!

Quote:
The purpose of the WaitForPort command in bin/startnet is to prevent
execution of the forthcoming commands before AmiTCP has fully initialized
itself. WaitForPort is part of the Rexx package that was bundled with
AmigaDOS 2.0 and later, and can be found in sys:rexxc.
I found WaitForPort in sys:rexxc.

I don't think that's the issue, as startnet has long since successfully completed by the time SimpleMail loads.

Puzzled...

well, does the sys:rexxc folder exists, and is there the waitforport command?
you can also look in the amitcp:startnet script.

if the tool can be found you can check like this: open a shell/cli and type:
cd sys:
waitforport

it should reply with "Usage: waitforport port-name"

if this happens, then the problem is somewhere else. try anotheer amitcp version, i would say.
but i've no clue about the amitcp setup - so it might work with your version 3 somehow.

Edited my post above. Please see.

Re AmiTCP 4.0, it was so difficult configuring the plipbox with AmiTCP 3.0 (which was included in the Network Setup Disk that the plipbox creator provided) that when I tried to install AmiTCP 4.0 it messed up the whole config so the Internet stopped working again.

I reverted to my backup files so the net is working again now.

Is there a simple way to just copy certain key/crucial AmiTCP files over the existing directory, without using the AmiTCP 4.0 installer that requests usernames, passwords, IP addresses, netmasks, etc? Basically, keep my AmiTCP setup but update key files? (I tried the Install file's built-in option to update my config but it fails with a crash/bug.)

i saw what you wrote. hmmm. do you have snoopdos installed?
once started before simplemail is running, it should list some "fail" if you come to the cannot open bdsocket.library.
in snoopdos you can it make more verbose, when you select "Functions" button and select all for System and AmigaDos.
after the error you can push the disable button in snoopdos to look in the list for some fails.

maybe there are some other components missing - something related can be found here.

Thanks a lot! I had seen that thread but I don't use EasyNet.

I don't have SnoopDOS.

Before I go down that path I'm wondering how I can update AmiTCP in the manner described in the above post.

i dont know where amitcp stores it's config. maybe it is all in AmiTCP:db folder
you could make a copy of the whole amitcp: folder on your hardrive, or maybe only amitcp:db
before you start a new installer.

#1) from version 4.3 install disk, about upgrading (Read Me First)
Quote:
2. Upgrading from Earlier Versions
==================================

The `Install AmiTCP' on the installation disk 1 supports upgrading from
earlier AmiTCP/IP versions. This release is fully compatible with the 4.2
release, meaning that the 4.2 configuration can be used with this release as
is. To make use of the new features generally requires your to reconfigure
AmiTCP/IP, though. Running `Config AmiTCP' will write over the existing
`bin/startnet' script, which you usually want to save for backup purposes.

Although `Install AmiTCP' can copy existing AmiTCP/IP configuration files,
there might be other files (configuration files, program files) that you
have installed on top of the earlier AmiTCP/IP. These files are NOT copied
over automatically, and you must either copy the files manually, or
reinstall the software in question.

Note that the `db/inetd.conf' will be copied from an earlier installation,
and it can refer to server programs not existing in the standard AmiTCP/IP
distribution. These programs should be copied from old `serv' directory to
the new `serv' directory.
there is more or less everything inside the amitcp: folder , one thing is ENVARC:LOGNAME which you can backup aswell.
came also from the "Read Me First" file - chapter 3.
make a full backup of your amitcp folder, thats the best.

#1) on sourceforge there are some more versions of simplemail you may try. version 0.17 until 0.42 - those without platform extension (os3) are for os3 - just tested 0.17.

Mission accomplished!

I can now receive AND SEND email from my (slightly enhanced) Rev 5 Amiga 500!!!

Still struggling with various programs on such a low level system, on a whim I resorted to trying my ISP's SMTP server with YAM 1.3.5 (where 1and1's had failed as it still required a password.) I had been told by TWC that their SMTP also required a password. But I put in mail.twc.com, no login info, in YAM settings...

AND IT WORKED!

YAM 1.3.5 is super fast, simple, and beautiful. Just what I wanted. It feels like an A500 program.

Sincere and heartfelt thanks to those who have helped along this journey!

I don't know how many other people have modern day email working on an A500, but I've certainly proved it to myself.

Mission accomplished!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to mail the local Commodore User Group...

That's an excellent result mate - kudos to you for your persistence in the face of lengthening odds! Big raspberries to your ISP too for telling you porky pies about needing a password for SMTP!!

While SimpleMail is a little better than YAM for mine, YAM would definitely be much more pleasurable to use on your A500 set-up. Great outcome in the end!!!

Just for fun, if anyone wants to receive an email from an Amiga 500, you can reach it and me on this machine specific addy:

1984 (at) chrisimpsonlineTEETH.com

Remove TEETH before emailing.

(Why 1984? Partly a dystopian Orwellian reference, partly when Amiga was first made public.)
