Loading AIAB r10.6 with WinUAE 1.5 in Vista

Hi all,

I tried this question in the New to Emulation folder, but it didn't draw any answers ... or even just a guess.

So here's hoping that this folder is more appropriate for my question.

Basically, although I've made WinUAE 1.5 do just about everything I've wanted it to do (playing hdf games, CD32 games, etc.); even loading the ClassicWB Lite workbench, I've had absolutely no luck loading the latest version of AIAB (r10.6).

I've followed carefully the various pages I've found (even a You Tube video that showed an older version of AIAB being loaded), and right up until I'm prompted to reboot everything loads absolutely perfectly. The system files are copied, screen resolution chosen, new icons chosen, wheel mouse, CD drive, etc. etc.

But when I go to reboot - at which point AIAB should load - it just bounces back to the initial install screen!

I'm running Vista Home with an Nvidea 8800GT video card, if that's any help.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

@Smecty:

Make sure you run WinUAE as administrator. Otherwise it is not allowed to write into the program directory. Either right-click on the icon and select "run as administrator" or make a shortcut with "run as administrator" set on the compatibility tab.

Or simply do not put user data in Program Files.

First, thank you all for such a rapid response!

Well, I tried both running winuae.exe as adminstrator and also putting the WinUAE folder under the C:\ dir, not under Program Files, but I ended up getting the same results: when it comes time for the installer to reboot WinUAE it really doesn't reboot ... the screen turns blank for a second and then it's right back to the beginning. A real reboot would take some time as WinUAE performs its calculations.

So then I tried this on a WinXP machine and I got the same precise results, too: no real reboot.

So maybe I'm doing something else wrong? Could it be something in my video card? I've tried any number of video resolutions in the setup, including the default 16 bit 800 x 600, but that doesn't seem to change anything. Gosh this is frustrating!

That's nonsense. WinUAE reboots very quickly, it does not do any calculations.

Check WinUAE's HDD config if the R/W box is checked for all entries. Also make sure that the AIAB files directories are not write protectd.

What you see is that WinUAE pretends to write files to HDD but doesn't. This can only mean that the files or directories are protected somehow.

That was the trick ... thanks! Everything loaded perfectly this time!
