Head Over Heels Remake !
Hey everyone.
For quite some time I am working on a Isometric 3D engine and soon there will be a release of a first game that uses it. It is Head Over Heels and this is how it looks : Head and Heels in Egyptus . The engine can do stuff like real shadows on objects and floors (never seen before) dynamic volumetric light sources (unlimited), flares, etc. altough not all of this stuff is used in HoH it will be used in its sequel ;-) Hope you like it. No release date yet, but it is gonna be SOON. |

Thanx guys :-) Altough most of the visible stuff is done by Graham Goring (all the graphics), but you can see glimpses of shadows and stuff too. For the playability you will have to wait some time... but I can assure you I did my best.
Well, Knightlore seems to be a popular subject amongst remakers... altough nothing really good surfaced yed. We will see what next, altough we are already planning the sequel, but first we need to get the approval of the original authors. The engine can cope with any isometric 3d game you can think off (even any modern ones, with or without hardware acceleration ;-) ). |

Every time I see "remake" in a subject line, I cringe and hate what I see (the usual blurry 3D stuff), but I'm glad I checked this one. Gorgeous image and impressive-sounding engine, as well.
My vote for isometric 3D remake...erm, "Universal Monsters" (I reckon you'll have to invent the rest of the game, unless a full version was published on some other platform). |

Hehe... well my favorite iso3d game ever is CADAVER (altough it had some really illogical puzzles), followed closely by DARKMERE. Then there is stuff like TREASURE TRAP (which still awaits its WHDLoad incarnation) and Hero Quest. I think CADAVER will get re-done for GBA by Bitmap Brothers soon too.
We will see what will be next... but before that we still have to finish HoH and release it :-) |

Yes, Cadaver rocks. Easily in my top 5 games of all time. Almost a shame that the BB's are redoing it for the GBA by the look of that screenshot!

That is amazing. Head over Heels and Batman (Hint Hint) are my two most favourite games as they were the first ones I ever bought (for my amstrad PCW8256)

Bat-Man is actually my favorite ZX-Spectrum game (followed closely by HoH).
I went with HoH as my first Iso remake because Bat-Man was already redone by Kak - even if it is still in the low resolution it looks good. Since its engine is basically the same it will be piss-easy to re-do Bat-Man with it someday, but don't hold your breath ;-) |

How?
How do create exact remakes, story-wise? Do you try and finish the game, recording all enemy attack patterns and what not? Or are there game guides, documenting each and every level/monster/puzzle?
(Another remake to consider: I remember a game where a knight would turn into a werewolf at night; I had it for my Amstrad. Forgot the title though...) Edit: Perhaps it was Knightlore (as mentioned above). |
