WinUAE HD Setup

GDay All,

I have a problem setting up a hard drive file in WinUAE. I read somewhere that the largest drive you can use with FFS is 4GB. No problem, I created a 4GB hard drive file in WinUAE 3.6.0 and loaded WB.

In WB I formatted the drive and all was well until I tried copying files to it. I can copy ~1.5GB of files and then I get the dreaded 'Disk Full' error message.

I also tried following this YouTube video [ Show youtube player ] to setup a PFS3 formatted HD, but I cannot get WB to recognise the HD in HDTools, in fact it doesn't show any drives at all, not even my boot drive??

What am I doing wrong?

WinUAE Setup:
Amiga 4000 - 040
WB 3.1 Rom + AmigaOS
Picasso96 uaegfx - UAE ZorroIII - 128MB VRAM

Any help would be appreciated.

I think the 1st partition has to be max 2GB only.
i'll add some more info, if I find something related.

#1) here is the CF / SD and large drives FAQ
in the image, under "File Systems", you can read about the 2GiB restriction.

In my recent learning curve about setting up HDF files, I had a problem copying a particularly large file to the HDF that also resulted in the "Disk Full" error, and I was helpfully informed that I should set my HDF file to use RDB Mode (The "HD controller" option in "Add hardfile"), and while I had to use HDToolBox to set up the partitions on that drive, it ultimately resulted in a faster, more reliable HDF.

Everything I went through is in this thread here: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=90383

Hope it helps.

@emufan thanks for the link

@Foebane I did try using RDB mode, but it made no difference, I still cannot get the drive to show up in HD Tools and therefore I cannot setup any partitions etc.

in the information window of HDToolBox, you have to set SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=uaehf.device
did you do that?

As far as I remember (on real amiga) : FFS = max partition: 4GB & max disk : 8GB.
Under KS1.3 the partition size limit is 2GB (and not 4G).
Of course you can use MUFS, AFS, PFS(-aio), etc. There you will have to read the manual for the limits as I don't remember them.

On WinUAE and FS-UAE, with the uaehf.device, things are different (partitions can be bigger) but you are still limited by your host file system (for example: FAT32 : max file size 4GB).

Anyway, I recommend you to leave away FFS and use PFS-aio (updated recently by Toni W.)

Ah, I remember that. I sorted it all out by myself, I just didn't mention it before.

Thanks Malko.

I of course meant a 4GB partition, not a 4GB Hard Drive. I will try creating another hard drive file using the PFS3 FS, wish me luck ... lol
