Will all the retro machines eventually die?.

Serious question.More and more i read about components failing on old machines.i know this is down to age along with use and their environment they where stored in.But are we facing a slow death on these machines. Will the components eventually fail and make it scarce replacements for these machines?.

It's OK, eventually you will also die.

Meanwhile there's WinUAE... it's a bit like the AI movie.

screw that, I'm building an AI Zorro interface that will transmit the thoughts of my brain into an A500 with 1MB RAM.

Yes, but we still have the right to emulate! ;-)

Everything dies - but is there the possibility that things can be repaired and sustained indefinitely with the right people?

For example, you can go to Museums and see Steam engines etc. still working.

The capacitors are probably the weakest part of the mother board I guess, anyway it seems it's still possible to replace them (some skilled people can do it for you). Moreover you have some alternate solution like FPGA Amiga (Minimig) or even better the future Clone-A to replace your dying Amiga (as for myself, I have a second A1200 bought in 1999, new in its box, as a backup Amiga if my main A1200 die).

I bought my main A1200 in 1993, she works perfectly, except for the DF0: who works once in a while, but I don't care since I rarely use it.

This is why it's important to re-make the original motherboard in modern components.

If you're talking about a timespan of 10 years or so, then no. In 50 years, then likely any hardware that has been cared for that starts failing will have no suitable replacable component, and CPUs and tiny memory chips that work will be worth their weight in gold.

As for a more generic 'will support/fandom of retro still be there in 50 years', well, I'd say it depends on how 'retro' the platform is. Amiga isn't quite retro enough, sad to say. It's too useful and has features not camp enough (high resolutions, many colors) so that it's in between camp retro and useless 'use and throw' computers. As for these last ones, it's hard to see them being cared for, there's not a 'platform' per se to gather round.

My collection of Atari VCS machines are still chugging away, as is my Philips Videopac 2000. My ZX-80 works a treat, but my G4 mac is strolling towards the knackers' yard .

Perhaps the old stuff really WAS made to last.....

Still, there's AROS, emulation and Minimig to keep us going when the real stuff gives up the ghost.

Oh, yes, that's true, I forgot about the 8520 CIAs. I have always heard of them being fragile componants. And now, speaking of the CIA, as I said before my DF does not work very well, it is constantly making noise like Ttzzz ccrrrkk ccrrkk, so I have to insert a disk to stop it, maybe it comes from a failing CIA... Mmm I will have to check it.

One of the reasons whilst i asked the quest.Today i sat taking caps off the A1200 *the method of using a gentle twist with pliers does work!*.and thought of recapping, and then in future of having to replace something else on the same board like a comp chip just put me off and make me rather use emulation on a modern pc.
