The transceiver connects to the AUI port and you can connect a regular RJ45 from your router to the transceiver.

Cool, I'll try for that Ariadne (sp?) first & see how I go.

Good to see my options are greater than I had initially imagined

Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it!

You'll hate me even more once I've got the hardware together & can't figure out how to install/configure a TCP/IP stack!

they are extremly useless as an everyday connection AFAIC!!!
No that was pretty cheap. Just wondered because of T_hairy_bootson comment.

I pay $AU129/month for 9GB of wireless data from Telstra. I route it thru a Draytek 2910 to the network at home. It serves between 4 and 8 desktops, and two windows servers. Have to reboot the modem and router regularly tho.

Let me know if you get stuck at all Fingers, I've installed tons of these things.

I'm on Virgin pre-paid...5GB for $50.

Thanks for the offer Jabsy, I may well take you up on it!

heh, just so you know when the aussies say 5gb for $40 or 9gb for $50 dollars they dont mean the speed. They mean total downloads allowed per month, still think its cheap?

You can get 40gb downloads a month for $60-$70 AU on broadband so unless you absolutely need to use 3G because you are on the move all the time, I really don't think its good value here yet.

You are correct THB, it's certainly not good value.

The portability suits me though

I'm stuck with it because my only choice is 2-way satellite or dialup... I'm 30 mins drive from the Darwin CBD and can't get DSL. Fortunately someone slammed into the RCM (Telstra Box in the street) with their car so it's being replaced....

Being in NT means I only get Telstra at high speed. Optus and Voda can only offer 64k on their wireless rubbish. I've tried satellite and it was bad enough for me to move back to dialup. I managed to scam some NextG for free for about 8 months, until I racked up a $3000 usage charge and had it cancelled. So now I pay

Ok, so my 3G router arrived today.

Purchased the AmigaNet card, but it won't be here for a while...thought I'd just test the router with my PC & then Mac anyway.

FAAAARRRRRRK!!!!!! (read below)

I spent about 3 hours trying to configure the router (via both PC & Mac), but with no real success.

The modem would appear to connect & then immediately disconnect, no matter what settings I tried.

Eventually I gave up & called the Virgin techo no-help-desk only to be told that the particular modem (& the firmware it contains) will NOT work with a router, as I need to run the program to connect (installed on PC, on Mac just runs from the virtual disc loaded into the modem).

This is VERY bad news!

Ok, so now I need a solution.

With an ADSL (yes, it's also ADSL) router such as this, can I build a server maybe running linux or a very slimmed down Windows, make it connect to the internet & then network the other machines (PC, Mac & A2000 which started all this mess) to it for internet access?

The router has a smaller 6 pin connection port for the DSL line (only 4 pins actually connected though), as opposed to the 8 pins for ethernet.

That means I cannot even physically fit an ethernet cable, plus half the "feeler" pins are missing!

What to do? $$$$ spent on a router nothing?!?! I just sent myself broke buying this & the AmigaNet card...combined I spent half my f*cking pay cheque!!!!

Simple. PC connects to the internet using USB 3G Dongle thingy, setup internet connection sharing on XP, have a network card (onboard mobo one or PCI) with cross over cable from the PC to your Amiga network card. The PC acts as a DHCP server, router, DNS etc... You fire up Amiga and connect to the net. I think thats everything you need.

Exactly what TonyYeb said:

Send the router back and get a refund.

Buy a second ethernet card (if you do not already have one). Connect the mobile-phone modem to your PC and then connect the Amiga to the PC using the second ethernet card and a back to back (crossover) ethernet cable.

Activate ICS (internet connection sharing) on your PC to share your network connection

Thanks guys, that'll sort me out.

Shame though, as;

A: I purchased the router on eBay, so of course no refund.

B: I had hoped to network more than 2 machines (e.g. PC, Mac, A2000 & eventually A1200).

Not all bad news though, so again I thank you

Which router did you buy? What model?

Could your ISP recommend a model that DOES work?

I guess you'll have to re-sell it on eBay? For more this time?

Billion, not sure of the model, I'm at work right now.

ISP no-help-desk said it cannot work with a router as software must be run on the computer to make it connect/validate it/etc.

Yep, I'll probably have to re-sell...but probably for less

Software must be run? That sounds a bit strange, I am sure if you access the billion web interface in the router you could enter all the settings and auth details. Some ISP help desk employees are completely useless and want you to do things their way with their equipment only. Have a look on the whirlpool broadband forums for your problem, I am sure there is an answer.

Indeed!

Virgin don't want you networking the modem, so they say it won't work...so you buy more modems!

A little reading on the Billion forums has shown me that it should work, might need a firmware upgrade, but others have the same modem/router connection working!

Happy days!!!!

Billion 7402XL router, Huawei E169 3G dongle/card.

Man, it's been working faster & more reliably tonight than ever...the Virgin software must limit speed & simply sucks...this is great!
