A1200 LED bodge job

I received an A1200 case today, but no LED board.. Had to make one myself.

The 2b motherboard that went in was already modified to take an A500 keyboard, so I removed the LEDs and ballast resistors from the kbd I was going to use, then dug out another A500 keyboard that had most of its parts missing and took the remaining LED and resistor from there.

I applied some sticky tape over the holes on the outside of the case and inserted the LEDs into the holes in the case, lining them up carefully, then I squirted in the hot glue to fasten them in place and peeled off the tape. ;-)

The legs were cut and bent to create the circuit and the series resistors were soldered directly to the legs.

Finally I cut a little sliver of plastic from under the controller PCB of the spare parts keyboard and hot glued that to cover the LEDs.

Just before the plastic went on top: http://jope.fi/amiga/a1200leds.jpg

Power - red, floppy - green, hdd - amber. Looks really nice. Amiga power LEDs are really supposed to be red. :-)

So be it. :-)

I have a bunch of A1200 keycaps that have been taking up shelf space since 1998, but they're really badly yellowed. I'll try making some retr0bright next week and then swap them in, as those yellowed A500 keys are a real eyesore in that nice white case. :-D

Very nice and not a bodge at all!
The first soldering I ever did was to reflow an A1200 power led!

I remember someone over A.org that replaced the HD led for two smaller rectangular units (in blue, argh!), one for the HD itself and the other for PCMCIA activity...

@Jope: nice hack indeed! Well done.

I did some final touches to the mod a moment ago.

The leftmost mounting post had to go, as one of the TTL chips on the A500 keyboard controller was right under it and the case didn't close too nicely.

Then I squirted in a little more hot glue to tie down the wires. As you know, when you have a loose wire that's soldered in one end, it will always break near the solder joint.

Very good job there, Jope!
I have to say, it looks better than the original method (the PCB board).

The led board is quite a bit more rigid, I dare say.. :-)

However my approach lets me use the A500 keyboard controller in its original place, so it's perfect for this application.
