Heys FOL

Welcome to the EAB i am sure you will like it here.

lets see....

after a couple of searches i have really begun to realise (and appreciate) your problem FOL,

I found this
http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/magnum1200 wich is absolutely hopeless

but a little more diggin revealed a picture
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showha...gi?HARDID=1025

i can see some markings but i cannot make them out, if you could take a picture and either attach it to a postie here or email etc i am sure we can help you.

I dont have the exact RAM board in the pictures. I have the M-TEC 1200. It is almost the same board, slightly different layout with MORE information on the silk screen. Might help.

Code:
LK1 : Memory On
Fitted RAM is on. Bare RAM is off.

LK2/LK3/LK4 : SIMM Size

With the right crystal and the jumper set to INT (Asynchronous) you can use any FPU upto 50MHz

Nice, thanks for the reply, apparently, its a viration of an apollo, but dont know if thats true. This is my first A1200, and havent much experience with the expansions etc etc.

Just need to find a place to get the FPU and crystal. So I can try it.

EDIT, just realised, the jumpers are different, mine on have 2 pins, and yours has 3 on each.

Unless you can get lucky and find a cheap source you'll pay pretty high for a 68882 FPU these days

I'd imagine these guys would have a suitable crystal for you:
http://rswww.com/

And here is a place to go if you want an FPU with a crystal:

Great, thats not bad, i spose i would have to go with 33Mhz, PLCC and 33Mhz Crystal. Just need to work out the jumpers now.

Mine has,

2 3 4
o o o
| | |
o o o

Which = 4Megs

Heres some pics of it (My camera sucks).

I need a good closeup of the Silk Screen around the RAM jumpers. In focus so that I can read what it says next to each pin.

With only two pins and 3 jumpers there are not many combinations

2^3 = 8 combinations

Shouldnt take long to work out.

No need to get an FPU. Nothing uses it. For the price of a 68882 + crystal you could almost get an 030 CPU board.

I hate to admit it, but this is on new to me, as I have never owned a 1200 before with expansions.

What are the benefits to having an FPU, speed? more RAM?

I should do some research I think.

In 99.9% of all Amiga games, applications and general day to day usage an FPU (of any speed) makes no, nil, nadda, diddly squat, not one ounce of difference.

RAM is important. Having more RAM (upto about 32Meg) makes the Amiga 1200 come to life. A 4 Meg RAM upgrade seriously increases the day to day speed of your A1200 and will make more games and applications work.

Ah, ok, ill just stick with this then, its at 4 megs atm. Ill stick an 8MB simm in it and workout jumpers. Also read some where that over 4MB can disable the PCMCIA slot. After further research this Magnum apparently doesnt disable it.

To add to this, so it might help others.

I got an 8MB SIMM, put it in and my Miggy kept crashing, thought i was going nuts. So i removed the 4 Plugable I.C's (after talking to the friendly guys over at amigakit.com) and then reseated them firmly (remember to mark i.c's, so they dont get mixed up).

After that, i removed all 3 jumpers and set the ON jumper to ON and it booted perfect with full 8 Megs. However it does disable the PCMCIA socket, but the ON jumper is used to limit the memory, so set it OFF when you want to use PCMCIA socket.
