Descent
Hi there,
I need two files of the commercial version of DESCENT 1, they are .HOG and .PIG files, which should be at least version 1.5 (or maybe 1.4). Can anyone upload for me? Thanks |

Isn't that a PC game? And if there is an Amiga version, I bet it is TOO NEW to be distributing any files of it around here.

The company released the source code and somebody else converted it to the amiga. I can upload the files tomorrow.

If the game is FREEWARE now, please do so. However, if there is a cubic inch of graayness in the game's situation ("vut it is considered as abandonware now" kind of stuff), please don't.

The DESCENT 1 source code is freeware.
The DESCENT 1 .hog and .pig files are classified as abandonware. So could rgen upload these files? (I need only versions 1.4 or 1.5... The only that works with Amiga porting of DESCENT 1) |

If that is the case just do a google search on Descent and Abandonware.

Okay I've uploaded the files. Join them and then extract.
I've looked at both the interplay and the parallax homepage and they only sell Descent 3 anymore. |

RCk, what to do? I only consider PC abandonware stuff that is 15+ years old, which Descent isnt.
Do what you think is right. I dont like those files. |

I thought that when the source code of a game goes freeware, the whole game would be freeware too.
Anyway, Rgen, just because you can't find the game being sold in the main site of the softwarehouse, it doesn't mean the game is "abandoned". For example, I believe you can still buy Super Stardust 96 for PC, or some really old Apogee games, even although they aren't on the homepage of its creators. Completely off-topic @Fissuras I loved your personal text above your avatar |

PC abandonware is shitty because companies are still active. It's very different for other platforms. That's why I dont like it.
I didnt say "I dont want these files uploaded" directly, but I would have preferred for them not to be there. There are plenty of abandonware sites out there carrying these files, and I surely wouldn't want trouble at the EAB caused by fucking stupid PC softcos. That's why I asked for RCK's opinion, he's got the final word about tehse subjects. RCk, where are you? |

I'm here.
The zone is only there for sharing old retro-gaming amiga stuff.
some exception can occurs, if you don't share illegal files. (and descent / pc is not enough old) |

@Shatterhand: The source code may be freely available, but not the data files. That's what is usually written in those distribution licenses. You may give the source and binaries compiled from it, with whatever modification, but you cannot distribute the other files (data files) from the commercial version.
And if you like that text above my avatar, you may use it, as you also deserves! Give me a five! 5! 5! 5! 5! 5! |

I had not only look at the main page but done a search and they only sell Descent 3.
Anyway if you think that only very old games should be uploaded I should not do that again. |

rgen: it's ok, this point was a first timer now. I wasn't even sure about RCK's stance on it until now. |

Just a note,
Amiga abandonware is tricky too, since companies might have went out off business but the software is still available from different stores. Here in Sweden we have 2 places to buy Amiga games from. The best bet is to get everything you need off BTTR if you want to play it legal. I have chatted with a guy on IRC who seriously thought spreading 8 to 12 year old Amiga games bad for the company and name Amiga and had as his part time hobby to report to Amiga wich sites had copies of games. |

Anyway, my stance is not against distribution of these games, but in the PC area it gets trickier because the companies tend to be more active and tend to bother sites with abandonware a damn lot. A site like BTTR shows that ex-Amiga softcos are more keen to let their games be distributed for free. |
