Trick with startup files is to find drivers and load them and most of stuff you need in upper memory block, so that your base stays as large as possible to ensure all games will run.

Here is topic in which I explained how to create dos shortcuts, long time ago...

Thank you for the link! Very clear as to what is being done. Alas if I had this knowledge 20 years ago my gaming would have been so much easier!

This is tempting me to get out my Packard Bell 166 MHz with MMX! Although this wouldn't be able to handle GTA 3! Mind you that was Windows game and not DOS?

Nice, great games (if it isn't Thief: Gold, find Thief: Gold). Need Thief 2 also of course, one of my favorite games

Are you into racing games? With a retro system you just have to check out games such as the original Need for Speed, Screamer 2, Midtown Madness and Motocross Madness 2. And maybe Driver and Carmageddon. Fatal Racing. Destruction Derby. Megarace 2. Damn, those were good days. Not all those games are exactly brilliant but they're certainly classics in their own way.

Couple of games to name that I still enjoy playing:

Win98:
C&C
Civilization II

SW: Dark Forces
SW: Dark Forces II
Total Annihilation
Warcraft II (+ addon)

DOS:
Duke Nukem 3D
Dune 2
X-Com: UFO Defense
Warcraft

For some of those games tho I would suggest use of open tools to get them running on faster computers. To review those tools and what games are really good, follow this link:

DOS Games

Win9X games

On both of those links, you have list of games on left, click one of them will open page with how to get it running and what tools to download.

I still prefer to use pcEm emulator for Win98/DOS, as well DOSBox + LaunchBox. Actually as front end goes, I use LaunchBox for all emulators except pcEm..

If you have a spare PCI slot then a Voodoo 1 card would go nicely with a lot of games from this era, e.g. Screamer 2 (my personal fave).
However they appear to be expensive if you don’t have one already.
