Ballistic Diplomacy (French & English translation)

Ballistic Diplomacy (1993 Handmade Games) French translation by AmigaFrance

http://hol.abime.net/1668

Original d7 DE:
Disk 1 Disk 2

This game was released only in German. Here is a version translated into French

More information:
https://www.amigafrance.com/forums/t...sticdiplomacy/

The game installation decompress the pictures during installation. The files of these pictures on the diskettes have a header "PACKCOLR". How to recompress them to make a floppy version of this translation

Thanks

Modified files:
Pictures in directory « lo » (modified with Grafx2): a.lo , b.lo , e.lo , m.lo , o7.lo , v.lo , v2.lo , i0.lo , i1.lo
Exe (modified with a hex editor): BallisticDiplomacy
Texts missions in directory « sys » (modified with a normal editor): level0.sys , level1.sys , level2.sys , level3.sys , level4.sys , level5.sys

The only files that really need recrunching are those in the "lo" directory.

...but you haven't exactly made it easy for people i.e. which files belong on which disk.

Anyway, I've worked this out

Using Crunch-Mania V1.91t, I compressed all data files in the "lo" folder.

"Disk 1" fits ok, unfortunately "Disk 2" doesn't though as it's not getting the same compression ratio as what was originally used...

Anyway, I'm no expert when it come to crunchers.

To make thing easier for "experts" to try; I've uploaded the following to The Zone! "BallisticDiplomacyFR.lha_split.lha"; which is your BallisticDiplomacyFR.lha extracted and then split into "Disk 1" and "Disk 2" files.

Thanks DamienD

on the site of amigafrance we only have compress the executable "BallisticDiplomacy" and the file "Harddisk Installer". And we have copied only new files uncompressed in directory "lo" and we have modify the structure between the two floppies (with the file gaccess.sys), one must not be too compact to be always readable with 1 Mo of memory. But the installer on the floppy disk hangs with the new files. The solution envisaged would be to make an installation script, but we lose the uncompress of the other files. I will prefer if possible the possibility of being able to uncompress all the files as originally to the installation.

If it is not possible to find how to compress in "packcolr", your solution to compact everything with a new compactor is a good idea

This for me was the key

Ok, so I've now managed to create a floppy disk version of your French translation.

I had to:
  • Compress all files in the "lo" directory using Crunch-Mania V1.91t.
  • Compress the program file "BallisticDiplomacy" with CrunchyDat.
  • Move the "inf" and "sys" directories / files from what was on the original "Disk 2" --> "Disk 1".
  • Adjust the "gaccess.sys" file accordingly.
All looks good and runs but you should test properly

Disk archive attached

...but be warned; if you don't have 2 disk drives / both disks inserted you'll experience a lot of disk swaps.

Finally, obviously there's no "Harddrive Installer" on disk but that probably wouldn't work anyway as it "unpacks compressed files".

Anyway, for people that want to run this from hard drive you just provide an .LHA file of your uncompressed work.

Ok, second attempt in order to try and minimise disk swapping when only having 1 disk drive, by rearranging files on disks...

See attached

...anyway, you get the idea / concept.

I'm now done with messing about with this translated game / files

The right thing to do would be to reverse engineering the PACKCOLR format and recompress the images.
Or repack all IFF images more efficiently (it is possible to reorganize the bitplanes).
Anyway the game fallback to IFF loading if PACKCOLR is not used.

Or perhaps simpler, patch the executable to make it accept a different image format (raw image + more efficient compression).

But is it worth it?
Probably the method used by Damien (two separate versions for floppy and HDD) is more practical

thanks DaminenD, I will test

@ross
the executable not change and is not compressed on original floppy. it is able to read images in compressed "packcolr" or uncompressed format

I should really learn to read more closely

Given this; the only uncompressed files that need to be recompressed from Aladin's .LHA file are the ones listed above in the "lo" directory.

The rest are just the same as the original German release, so can still be compressed using whatever method was originally utilised, as the program can handle them

So, have now create a new / final set of .ADFs. The file structure is exactly the same as original German release except for one file; I had to move "w.lo" from disk 2 --> disk 1 for space reasons.
