Magellan

Now, before everyone thinks I mean DOpus...NO. I saw this application listed under utils in an Amiga Format supplement 'The best of the Amiga 1991' (free with issue 27/Oct'91).

It is described as an expert system: basically, a very sophisticated database which you teach certain facts and you are later able to interrogate it by asking simple questions, whereupon it will draw conclusions. Fascinating (as Spock would exclaim)

This sounds like a great teaching aid. Anyone come across it? If anyone has it can they please put it in the zone. Many thanks.

Did this application ever turn up? I could not find it on the disks for the Amiga Format #27 1991 supplement above. There was an article about in in Amazing Computing Dec 1988 but no scan found yet.

Googling also turned up a manual addendum and a supplement but not the original manual - see
ftp://arnold.c64.org/bombjack.org/co...l_Addendum.pdf
ftp://arnold.c64.org/bombjack.org/co...kit_Manual.pdf

Does anyone know what language Magellan was based on - Prolog maybe?
Maybe someone has it lurking and could load it into the zone please? Thanks

I'm in the process of scanning the manuals which I got in a box with other books. Unfortunately there weren't any software with this.

The software was developed by Emerald Intelligence.
and the version of the package I have here is v1.1.

If anyone has this software, scans and dumps of the disk is highly requested.

I believe it has been recently added to TOSEC.
There is a recent post somewhere in EAB about this.

way to go emufan!!

but the hunt is not over..

Disk 2 of version 1.0 is still missing.

and preferably diskette/label scans (600dpi png)

And to make things clear
What bomjack has on his site extra is the Warranty card.
Though I have box scans, the full manual, manual addendum 1.0.
I do think I have the warrenty card as well + registration card.
Though it's good for preservation, I didn't add it to the site yet.. it might come if I start making some redesign

@solid snake, just look at my signture ;-)

Woohoo! Thank you, emufan! I've been looking for these disks FOREVER! I used to own a licensed copy of the software in the 1990s, but sold my Amiga 2000HD + Toaster for a good price and included all the Amiga software I had.

Has anyone downloaded/installed this? I remember from my Amiga A2000HD that it would only run on 1.3 ROMs, not with upgraded 3.1 ROMs installed. Maybe that's the reason this thread has no updates? This is the only reason I just bought a used A1200 with 3.0 ROMs.

When I originally bought Magellan it was already in 1.1 (I never saw an earlier version at retail). Is there a reason anyone would need version 1.0 disks?

Yes, OFTEN confused with "Opus Magellan" (i.e., "Directory Opus," or "DOpus"), the Amiga file-utility application from Inovatronics. "Magellan 1.1" is an "expert system" app from Emerald Intelligence and is really cool. Nothing else like it. It's a reverse-inference engine, natural-language, textual-based database with a GUI.

As in other AI languages (e.g., Prolog, LISP, etc.), you input a bunch of rules (e.g., "The sky is blue; blue is cool; cool is melancholy"), then you can ask Magellan questions, and based on those rules, Magellan will infer the answer from the database. There is no "programing" whatsoever. All inference/algorithms are performed "under the hood." Really quite cool.
