If I can, I'll try and dig it out sometime today and post up a picture of mine so you can get a good idea of where the bits should go and the orientation. Would that help ?

Sorry away at 2 day conference, that would be great thanks!

Before I go digging about in the loft, I found these pictures... it might help......... look at the second photo... bottom centre... clearly a 50 Hz Crystal. Mine for DEFINATE has the crystal. I dunno how it managed to work without one.

I know the link below says 1260... it's for deinate the 1240.

I might put mine up for sale in a week or 2 if truth be told as well as my Amiga 1200. I have decided to move on as I can emulate what I need, and I may just plump for a new bit of music kit instead. the 1240 alone could probably get me around £100 on e-bay.... but I'm open to offers. I will test and bung memory on it as well. I'll post it the relevant thread as I don;t want to go to much off topic (if I decide to sell)

@PaulyQ

I already posted these pictures (see above) and you can see from the closeup link that I posted that it's not a 50 Hz(?) crystal but an "80.000000 MHz" one. This would give an 040@40MHz, the fastest official speed the 040 ever had.

BTW: I dont think there is such a thing as a "50Hz" crystal

No, soldering, just get the crystal and pop it in there. Watch the orientation as I said earlier.

I recommend that you re-check all the jumpers, but they should be fine.

Thanks, just what I needed. As expected, the oscillator is socketed, so just buy a 14 pin oscillator at any speed rate you'd like from 50 to 80 MHz, and it should start up. If you go for anything higher than 50 MHz be aware of installing some proper cooling.

The oscillator will have a black dot at one of the pins. This one should be were the small square is on the PCB.

Apollo 1240

@DDNI

You might want to check the button battery under the plastic cap aswell - I got an Apollo 1240 recently, and found the battery had just started to leak. Fortunately I caught it in time, otherwise the battery acid can eat your board alive (as many an A4000 owner will tell you).
The battery can be safely removed - it is only used for keeping the time on the onboard clock afaik.

PS - apollo 1240 working without the oscillator??? Sounds like a load of twaddle to me. There would be no clock signal to the processor. At best the amiga might work in 68ec020 mode, but I sincerely doubt that.

@(cmdr_jameson) ta for that, the battery is soldered onto the board and has slight signs of leakage at the top only. If all is well when i get the oscillator, i will whip it off.

Ok got a 50 mhz oscillator - All Jumpers set properly. Still not working ...

This is what I have tried so far.

Ram disabled at Jumper.
then
Ram removed from board disabled at Jumper.
then
Ram removed from board jumper on.

Battery removed from board.
then
Ram disabled at Jumper.
then
Ram removed from board disabled at Jumper.
then
Ram removed from board jumper on.

All tried with 3.0 and 3.1 roms.
The early boot up screen cannot be accessed.
I got a red screen once but it generally is just dark grey.

Is there anything else that I can try?
Is it worth sending the card to http://www.amigacenter.com/ what else can they do?

Amiga Center can do a whole lot of things, and most likely get it working. I have gotten a couple of non working Amiga 4000 motherboards repaired, as well as a BPPC. Testing is free of charge, so you only loose the postage costs back and forth if you want them to take a look at it.

Apparently booting the computer with the card in it but with out oscillator can have damaged the board, but it can have been defective before you got it.

I got my Apollo 1240 back from Amigacenter yesterday.
Apparently there was some cold solder spots on the board, three broken tracks and a dead 8mb simm. JJ repaired the board, replaced the battery back up clock and swapped out the simm with a 16mb one doubling my ram!

Service from diagnosis was fast - 5 days to repair and return to me!

Price....... A little expensive at £62 but as I got the card for nothing it has worked out to be a bargain!!! This price included return postage and a 3 month warranty too.

I highly recommend AMIGACENTER France

Just wish I had asked him about a SCSI Interface
