Amiga 500 mouse not working

I recently purchased an A500 to strip for parts for the GBA1000 project. I just wanted to test it out, make sure it works. Boots up, and I can use the keyboard to move the mouse pointer, and then click things with the mouse. The original amiga tank mouse however, will not scroll or move. Opened it up to clean out any debris, and it still doesn't move. When I actuate the rollers inside the mouse by hand, the pointer jumps up and down or left/right slightly, but never moves out of place.

I don't have another mouse or Amiga to test each with. All I have is Kickstart 1.2 and a wb1.3 disk, so i don't even have any test utilities.

Does this sound like a bad mouse, or something in the A500 is amiss?

If you want to test the mouse port. Put a joystick in the mouse port and do circular motions. iirc this would move the mouse pointer in workbench.

it wouldnt move the pointer in a fashion you want to though,it just moves diagonally from right to left if done in a clockwise rotation and from right to left in anti clock.
but it does move the pointer.

Do you have +5V at the mouse port? If so, then the next culprit is the Paula...

Wrong as usual

Only fire button/left mouse button is connected to CIA.
Right and middle button is connected to Paula.
Movement: Denise via U15.

But usually "other port works, another has movement issues" is caused by damaged U15.

I plugged in a gamepad to port 1, and I spun the pad around as suggested for joystick method and the pointer moves one pixel to the right or left, then back. Definitely not diagonally(like I remember from years ago)

Checked, and I have +5V at pin 7 on both joy ports.

I also found a game(arkanoid) to load off floppy and tested with a joystick - it won't move left or right unless I spin it in circles. Mouse still doesn't work. What does this seem like now?

Arkanoid is a mouse game as far as I know.

If I were in your shoes, I would try another mouse. Find a cheap one on ebay or something.

Could well be that the mouse cable is broken internally..

Load up a two player game such as Battle Squadron, set second player to joystick and test.
