Calling it quits

I'm done with arcade gaming. I'm just getting too old for managing the controllers so I'm hanging em up.

I must say goodbye to this terrific board and to this terrific fella, Damien.

I only wished I found this board sooner. It's been fun fellas and keep it up!

You know my father is approaching 80 and he still is gaming

Sure his reflexes are not what they used to be but he is still having fun

I knew an old guy, who, when I met him, only played Solitaire.

I introduced him to Elite, First Encounters, and he LOVED it.

Chatted to him on Skype a few years ago, and he would have been well on in years.

"Still flying around the galaxy Commander" he tells me. "A friend setup something on my PC so I can keep playing it, and I'd still got a save file with my thargoid ship, and I have used one of those tools so I can tweak the cargo space of ships a little".

As for me, my kids (19 years old) THRASH me at Halo now most of the time, to the point they dont like playing me that much, and I'm only in my 40's, but last Sunday they had a mate round, and I beat him most rounds, and came 2nd in the final round.

Play for fun, and win or loose, you win.

So true . As we say "the return of the crank handle" (the backlash/kick-back). Mines are smaller but Adventure games are cool as you have to "think" to solve the adventure more than "act" to beat the others .
But well, as long as I can finish a game like SotB I think I still have some kind of good reflexes even if I get my ass kicked in Street Fighter most of the time now .

That's incarnate wisdom

@BullyDog : Maybe you will discover interest to new games' type (you didn't suspected) and will continue enjoying the entertainment. The pleasure you get from a game is not just a matter of reflexes

Err. I don't see how one follows from the other. You don't need to play games anymore to hang out with people who do play games. This entire board is fuelled by keeping the memory of the 80's/90's alive and sort of pretend we're still living in those days

Stay, play pretend!

Seems I'm only interested in word games and crosswords. I did enjoy the game show games.

The problem is my disabilities which included arthritis and pain. I'm preferring keyboard rather than controller.

I guess I don't have to quit the board but I don't have much to say.

If you’re all keyboard, try rpgs and especially Ultima IV .

Glad you’re here!

Just play the games via keyboard in WinUAE and don't connect / use a controller

Also I don't handle stress very well and some games stresses me. Silly I know as it doesn't has to be.

Will be sorry to see you go but as others have said there is more to the Amiga than games.

In fact I find the hardware aspect of the machine to be far more interesting than the software. The amount of peripherals that are available for the Amiga is absolutely ridiculous.

Totally agree, still tinker with my collection of Amiga hardware, all the way from the A500 through to the A4000.

In fact my last project was swapping out the A4000 into a full tower ATX PC case, it was fun modding the case and making sure things worked afterwards.

I never had an Amiga so I'll never know. Back then it was too expensive for me.

I hear you, I also have done the same thing with other LEGACY hardware, PC's parts and even a few MAC Clones.

I may have some old PowerMAC's around too but I like you never got into the REAL MAC's due to the cost.

I still own some of these too, both C64's and C128's with tons of software too.

These don't see much use any longer either.

Do you not own any of these machines and peripherals any longer ?

OK, I understand, space and all is not a luxury everyone has.

Be sad to see you go BD. I rarely game at all (if ever) these days (i usually have a play at Cannon Fodder 'Christmas' Edition once a year though - I don't understand modern gaming, it's really not my cup of tea.. it's like trying to watch modern movies - they're not movies to me in the traditional sense) But it's always nice to reminisce over the 'old days' on the forum.
