Thanks for your research. A small addition to that current message at amiga.com in case you don't know yet: Take a look at the html source of the page and find another rot13 scrambled message there...

The snake which cannot cast its skin has to die. As well the minds which are prevented from changing their opinions; they cease to be mind.

Indeed, what I don't get is why Jens bought the P96 rights while others just use it without any issues. If Jens would be the one suing everyone he would have come after the Vampire guys too, right?

No, the old version is still for free. And the Vampire is not shipped with anything in regards to P96 whatsoever, so why should they? The vampire has a gfx chip, yes, but you need to install P96 in order to use it. Saying that vampire would have to pay for a license is like saying nvidia should too, because they make gfx chips.

On another note, the included kickstart rom in vampire is licensed and is included in the buying price of the accelerator.

No: P96 is not used by the RTG on the Vampire - at least not more than on any other gfx-card.
P96 CAN be used as a driver to talk to this hardware (here implemented on a FPGA).
So can any other driver software, like cgx in AROS

So it depends on what software/drivers the user installs on his Vampire and if he/she is happy with the old shareware or not.

Vampire Team never claimed to have a licensed version - In deed they officially do not distribute any version at all.
Cloanto distributes a licensed version of P96 and says so - Jens disagrees.

Vampire is hardware with preinstalled ROM

P96 is (like OS and everything else) software so it is a strange question

Someone should have told Jens he only bought the right to see the source and compile his own versions of it. Actually maybe that's exactly and all he bought.

I checked Nvidia's page and didn't see a P96 driver. Apparently as long as you don't ship a floppy with a piece of hardware that has a full copy of P96 including the Adpro and other application drivers, there is no need to obtain a license.

In that case anyone can redistribute a P96 driver for their hardware, and tell users to just check Aminet for the other parts to it, assuming they can copy RAM:mydriver.chip to libs: picasso96. But if they can't do that, just say "hey that's way too complicated, here's a whole OS install with various licenses from 50 different developers, just copy that to a CF and boot it up!"

Good to know that this hubbub was all about nothing.

Amigans had already started to pick sides long before this.

I keep looking at your profile and it states you are 36 years old. Is that a typo? 16 maybe?

Just relax, and enjoy our hobby and don't get caught by these animosities.

And if you don't like a company just don't buy their products, as simple as that.

Everything else is just another Amiga soap opera that you should discuss amicably, whilst enjoying a bag of popcorn, a glass of wine or whatever else floats your boat.

@gulliver

I've never tried it but I heard Amiga drama is best served with some Mad Dog 20/20.

@Pyromania

They look interesting. Which one do you recommend I try?
I will need to ask the liquor store here to import one for me.

Just the popcorn for me. I've no soft spot for any of the companies involved but I'd rather it were solved amiably instead of the all-out war it seemingly has become.

We should settle this by sticking them all in a room to take turns playing the game Keep Talking, and Nobody Explodes in VR. Then maybe afterward they'll realize they should be working together to make more money instead of making the Amiga community explode like they're doing now.

The Amiga vultures coming to an agreement? I think they would sooner resort to cannibalism.
