What can I do with this...ZorRAM
Its a 128MB RAM card for Zorro III Amigas from AmigaKit. So the question is, what software I can use which require so much ram in A3000 040? The problem is, that Amiga can get by on few megs of ram. I would like to buy it, but is it worth it at $155
http://cgi.ebay.com/ZorRAM-128MB-Fas...item255b233ef5 Some 3D rendering sw might use it, but it's so slow.... Cool factor? Any suggestions???? |

Why would you like to buy it if you've no idea what you'll use it for?

Why buy ZorRAM from Ebay when you can buy it directly from us here: http://www.amigakit.us/product_info.php?products_id=958 ZorRAM is useful if you are using your Amiga with larger memory consuming programs such as Pagestream, Ghostscript, TV Paint, FX-Scan/Scanquix, Lightwave, Wordworth/Final Writer |

Some demos which require more than 16Mbyte Fast RAM, but without an 060 CPU you cannot run too many of them.

In regards to the A3000 unlike the ZorRAM, the Elbox option would mean spending extra to move the motherboard to a tower case (if you don't care about keeping the original A3000 case).

Guess that's what the 'directly' is hinting at No problem with getting all the attention first and I'm sure he'll include a link to buy directly from AmigaKit for the buyer.

the ZorRAM is a great bit of kit, and bumps up the use of the A3640 and A3630 Accelerator Adapter cards as these particular cards DONT have any fast RAM.
Because of this the A3640 and A3630 rely on the motherboard FastRam, which I believe has a slower access speed compared to Zorro3 Memory like the ZorRAM and DKB128 even the Z3Fastlane (although pending on your Buster revision the later two cards may have issues). With the ZorRAM you can bestay the need for an accelerator card with memory as well as provide a faster FAST RAM access for the accelerator. If you are into writing / sequencing / tracking music modules with lots of 16bit stereo samples with a need to enjoy on your internal Z2/Z3 sound card then 128MB of RAM will be a boon indeed. So a ZorRAM 128 (or more) would be a huge boost if you own one of following Blizzard 4030 (030@40/50) 8 - 9.1 MIPS aprx PowerChanger 040 (40mhz) 040 (slow Motherboard FASTRAM access) - 28MIPS aprx* QuadDoubler 50 (Doubler 4000) - (upto 50mhz 040 adapter for the A3640) 32MIPS aprx *the power changer doesn't support 040 burst ram access when you look at it in terms of cost-effectiveness, £160 would get you 128MB of Z3 RAM and atleast an 040@25Mhz, for what you use it for, it simply comes down to your imagination =D |

@Zetro
Just a quick correction to your post: £99 gets you 128MB, £155 gets you 256MB |

I don't have any of those upgrades and I guess I might invest in a video card instead. |

Why do people buy new 20" wheels for a car, when it probably would perform even better with 15" wheels?
If you are a fan of big ass wheels that could be used on a jumbo-jet, it would probably make sense. If you are a fan of Amiga retro computers, 256mb ram in my beloved A4000 would make perfect sense. This question sounds like something my father would ask me when I tried to explain why we needed a US Robotics HST 16.8 instead of my U.S. Robotics Sportster 14.4. My answer was: I'm a sysop, its so important that my life almost depends on it. In the end, I don't think I had any user that ever connected at 16.8, but I was damn proud of my shiny new modem. |
