Virus programs

Hi, can anyone of you nice chaps tell me the best virus program to use on my Amiga with Harddrive..

I used to use one years ago by john veldehous... anyway his name is something like that (sorry John).

Im using one at the min from the Classic Workbench but the virus definations dont appear to be upto date, or have there been no more virii since the early days? It would be nice to just get this program updated with any latest threats.

Try Virus Executor, it was uploaded to aminet a couple of weeks ago, dunno if it was a new version though...

Or just look in Aminet/utils/virus for anything with a 2 digit age

Thanks severin, its the same program Im using but is vce 2.31, mine is vce 2.28. So yours is slightly newer although still only knows the same amount of virus, 813 types. The patchbrain is upto v1.52 now..

VirusExecutor does not know viruses by itself, it uses xvs.library to identify a virus. Get the latest version of xvs.library to increase the amount of viruses.

Have a look at www.vht-dk.dk for an overview of Amiga virus programs and known viruses. There is also a mailing list where virus warnings and update notices are published.

YeaH! Another ClassicWB user..............

The new VirusExecutor only allows its files to be updated via liveupdate built into the program as explained here.

Version 2.28, the one used in the classic workbench, is still the best IMO as it uses the standard recognition file found here (as thomas explained)

The recent ClassicWB already has the latest XVS installed (may 2003).

If you have internet access for your Amiga, you can grab the 2.33 version with live update. If not, you have to wait for the XVS lib to be updated.

To be honest, not many new viruses are released for the Amiga today and as long as you've got the latest XVS everything should be fine. It finds all the major viruses on game adfs and that's the only place I've ever found a threat after downloading loads of Amiga software from the net over the past several years.

Yep, the adf problem is the reason I was looking for a virus checker.

What it is, my friend asked me to do some adfs to floppy for him as he also resurected his Amiga after becoming bored with his PS2, I done several for him but he came back complaining that the Saddam virus (very topical) was on some disks I gave him, he says it flashed up when he loaded a disk (Wings-2), I was alarmed so ran what I done for him thru the VC exucuter program from classic WB but it came up with nothing, thats why I wanted to update or a different checker but Im sure the Saddam would have been picked up as its years old I think?

Now then he also brought some floppies around which he had formatted himself and each of those floppies had an unknown bootblock, So has he a virus?.. I dont know, but Im sure after formatting he should have standard bootblock at least.. He said he used Xcopy format.

edit: can I scan an ADF for a virus or will I have to turn it into an Amiga disk first?

After formatting the disk has no boot block at all. You need to use the Install command to write a bootblock to the disk. If it has a bootlbock after formatting, you can be quite sure the virus is already in memory and writes itself to disk. (Not sure about X-Copy, maybe it writes a bootblock).

X-Copy writes its own bootblock which shows something like "no virus on bootblock" when you boot from this disk.

so its a non standard bootblock but not a virus

Doing so to an original purchased copy MIGHT render it... STUFFED.

Found that out a LONG time ago.... just after I got my first amiga.

Cant remember the game, it was an arcanoid clone I think.

Anyone got a list of the arcanoid clones ?

Writing to an original disk is always a very stupid idea.

X-Copy is not X-Copy!

OLD versions of X-Copy did this, but new versions permit you to SELECT the kind of bootblock you want! (Xcopy, ADOS, NOBOOT)

I was doing some scans on adfs and found wings-2 with a saddam virus using the same virusexecutor that comes with the current classicwb. It appears to pick up the virus fine when the disk is in adf format.

Then I remembered this thread!

Some "saddam" viruses are also listed in the program (see below).

Did you use "sector check" in virusex as well as file check?
Since this thread is over a month old do you really care?

All the latest virus checkers use the same recognition file, so if virusex doesn't spot viruses, none of the others will either.
