Removing labels from floppys

How? I hated this when the Amiga was new and it's still a problem 30 years later. Any tips, because this is ridiculous;

1) Peel off as much paper as you can
2) carefully use a cotton bud with a drop of "Goo Gone" on it to clean up the adhesive
3) use a tissue lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol to remove the "Goo Gone" residue.

Be very careful with both the Goo Gone and the isopropyl alcohol as these liquids could damage the magnetic surface of your disk by going thru the protective shutter

Goo Gone is practically impossible to find where I live.

There are many similar products in local stationery shops here, I'm sure you could find a similar one. Electrolube do one and it smells of oranges Just called label remover and is an aerosol with a brush applicator. Very good at what it does.

Goo Gone is made from an orange peel oil extract. Any similar label remover liquid should work.

Try and avoid spraying it directly on the 3.5" floppy disk hard cover as it can be drawn by capillary action under the protective shutter or the shell joins and will then contaminate and damage the magnetic layers of the disk.

Use a lightly moistened cotton bud to apply this liquid as it will need mechanical effort to work on and remove the dried up sticky adhesive residue.

It also works on sticky tape residue and chewing gum!

Tillexempel.

If it's valuable disks you can always take them apart before cleaning.
Or salvage the housings from defective disks.

Another example:
http://www.biltema.se/sv/Kontor---Te...ff-2000029987/

Sounds like a similar product as it also has a lemon scent.

If you can't find goo-gone (Edit: Saw an MSDS for this. Goo-Gone is odorless kerosene with an orange scent agent. No actual orange oil), you might be able to mix some alcohol and orange (or lemon) oil extract (be sure it is real not imitation).

Nail varnish remover is perfume and acetone (usually), so you can price your options out

Whatever you use, be mindful of not only capillary action but also the fumes of the solvent you use. Some are mild, but others can be caustic and degrade the internal media. You can avoid this with a small fan as you work.

Since I'm not some kind of IT millionaire who can afford single-purpose chemicals, I've only used water and isopropanol on my disks.

In most cases, applying a new label on top of the old one is enough, though. Even Commodore did that.

Not sure if you are meaning acetone, but it is very cheap and available at most hardware stores. 32oz is usually >$5

Of course I don't mean acetone, but I've never dared use that on plastic surfaces.

Any way to remove it without destroying the label? I have a copy of Tetris I'd love to restore but the disk has a sector I can't write to. I have a Kryoflux and can write a new disk and that works. But can I transfer the label to the new disk without damaging it?
Another option would be to swap out the actual floppy media inside the case, but I'm not sure you can open a 3.5" disk without ruining the case??
Hmmm.. ;-)
