Big grin A very serious discussion about the homoerotic aspects of R-Type

Game Cabaret: Repressed Homoeroticism in R-Type

Enjoy.

(Funny how this says more about the author's "problems" then R-Type itself... )

Wow... I mean it's just completely off. We can talk about those dubious heads firing something in Parodius, but that is just Like you said (in very small letters) it tells a lot about the guy who has written it

My thoughts exactly, he is masking his own homoerotic desire by blaming it on video games!

"arcade games such as R-Type have contributed to the repression of male homoerotic desire since 1987"

How it should have been:

"arcade games such as R-Type have contributed to the repression of my homoerotic desire since 1987"

I think that analysis goes a bit over the top but R-Type had a very vivid imagery (partly inspired by Giger's paintings which sexual connotation was clear) that is one of the reasons why it made school.

Also games are (or at least were) almost exclusively made by and for males, so no wonder if games like doom, quake & co. which could also be interpreted as sexually connoted (look, you have that big penis at the bottom of the screen, now go ejaculate on everything that moves and collect pills for a bigger erection) still have so much success.

I'm more concerned about the insanely realistic war and army propaganda games with movies budgets filling the shelves nowadays (maybe the return of casual gaming a la ds/wii or the retro gaming craze is a protest against that ?)

That article should be a mandatory reading in pyschology/psychiatry schools.

"- Hello Dr. Zimberkimpf. Here is my son, Tommy, he is addicted to video games
- Any genre in particular?
- Shoot'em ups
- Hum, I see... "

Never heard of Cho Aniki?
I recommend the Hardcore Gaming 101 article about it:

What? Hardcore gaming?
101? Isn't that a 0 (see the hole) between two 1s (1 is a phallic symbol of course...)?
Maybe it is time for the authors of this site to pay a visit to Dr. Zimberkimpf...

The connection with 'repressed homoericitism' is rather tenuious, even for what is intended to be a tonge-in-cheek article. One could just as easily argue the game is full of mysoginistic symbolism.

You don't need to look that deeply into R-Type's symbolism to see that it's a bit 'gay'.

Especially with the benefit of hindsight, and some kick-arse titles like Project-X and Disposable Hero, we can see that R-Type just plain 'sucks arse'.
