Setting up a Chromebox for retro games

I have an Asus Chromebox (+ an external 3TB USB drive) that I use as a media center with OpenELEC/Kodi installed. Lately I've been thinking about also setting up a small retro game center so that I can play all my old favourites on the big telly instead of the PC.

The Chromebox has an Intel Celeron 2955U Haswell CPU and 2GB of RAM. The GPU chip is an Intel HD Graphics, I'm not sure which revision.

Does anyone have any tips on which OS I should try for emulating old hardware such as the A500 or C64 etc.? I could probably install it on an SD card or a USB stick and then load all the gaming stuff over the network since I have the stuff on my PC. I have quickly tried Puppy Arcade but with dismal results.

If it can run Windows, do that.

It seems that only Windows 8.1 or higher will work on the box, but is 2GB too little memory?

I run WinUAE in my tablet, which used to run Windows 8.1 and now runs Windows 10.
It also has 2GB of RAM.

WinUAE and WinVice run great.

Thanks, it seems promising so I think I'll have to give it a go. Windows would definitely be the easiest way to do things.

And there are awesome frontends for Windows you can use to run a dedicated gaming machine!

Give it a go, I think you won't regret it.,
