Huzzah, right ICS is internet connection sharing, not the windows garbage though.

On the Amiga, type in 192.168.1.10 as the default gateway.
Did your ISP give you the addresses of it's nameservers? If not try either leaving it blank, if that doesn't work then set the primary nameserver to 62.3.253.97 and the secondary to 195.112.4.4.

Those are both needed for internet access on the Amiga. The first tells it where to go and the second tells it what servers to work out IP addresses and DNS addresses.

OK that is achieved.

so what software is now needed to:

a) transfer files between the two [what i actually wanted to do in the first place]
b) connect to the net?

thanks for this help

any ftp prog on either side can transfer between the ip addresses on the local network, or you can use Amiga Explorer on the PC.

Everything is pinging but A.E. can't seem to connect to the Amiga. Just keeps saying that the amiga TCP/IP socket not found. It then tells me to try and ping the Amiga 192.168.1.10 which works as it should.

Any ideas?

both machines have to be on the same network adress (basically xxx.xxx.xxx.??? where only the last 3 numbers are different).

Did you get the pcmcia reset file from aminet?

The way I set mine up was to use a compatible pcmcia network card, downloaded the pcmcia reset file, then setup the network utility which checked out the pcmcia card. Next run your tcp/ip software and have it automaticaly asign an ip adress through dhcp (assuming your network has a router or something that will do that, if not set it manualy). Set the IP adress you got or made up in Amiga explorer and try to ping each other.

hi

If you rad above you can see what I have so far done. I have th reset software and the Pc can ping the AMiga quite sucessfully in the COmmand Line, it's just Amiga Exlorer that isnt working.

I notice that on the Amiga side the TCPlibrary it is using is bsdsocket.library is this coreect or does it need changing to use the new driver? just a thought, proably wrong.

Er, 192.168.1.10 is the PC, so you are effectively just pinging the same machine, not the Amiga...

That is only true is the subnet is set to a /16 array, which it is, but as I already specified what addresses to use for the machines, Peanut should have them on the same subnet anyway. 10 for the PC, 11 for the Amiga.

Amiga explorer is easy to setup, just pick tcp/ipp instead of serial and enter the IP of the amiga. For me it was easy because my network has a router giving the dhcp and its easy to check. I have to check exactly whats setup on my amiga and in what order it works. From what I remember on boot up I have to run the reset program before I run the tcp/ip app and then it works.

Yes my mistake!!

OK, the PC is successfully pinging the Amiga on 192.168.1.11
I start AE on the Amiga and then on the PC. The milisecond I click on the desktop AE icon on the PC the message "Aexplorer Program Failed (error #80000004)" appears on the Amiga.

Some seconds later I get 'Timeout reading from TCP/IP coneection' on the PC.

????

It seems that AE doesn't work on your setup for some reason, try reinstalling it, but other than that, I dont know what you can do, other than set up Samba or an FTP on it.

The lights don't usually light up until the card is in use. One of them lights up to show the network is active; the other flashes as data is transmitted. Have you got some sort of network running (Amiga Explorer, Samba, etc)? Just having the card inserted and the drivers installed won't activate the card, even if it has a network cable connected.

I wish there was, I have still progressed no further. We need an FAQ in the EAB FAQ.. thingy. This question comes up again and again so I feel it would be worth.

Is anyone willing?

I agree

All we have so far is this:
How do I transfer my old games to the PC? How do I transfer my ADFs to my Amiga?

If someone else can/wants to type something up (unless Akira is already doing this) then they can post it here and I or Akira could then transfer it to faqs. (They will get credited)
