Dumping to ADF on a real Amiga

Hello,

Whats the best software to use for dumping Amiga floppies to ADF on a real Amiga?

Been using ADF-Blitzer but I can`t seem to get it to work for some disks. It read the disk for about 2 seconds and writes a 880kb ADF but the file is bad.

Any ideas?

Use DMS and then use WinUAE on the PC to convert to adf or use XDMS on the pc

Much simpler as no LHA etc.. req

My Amiga is networked to my PC so I would not need to compress the images to transfer them anyway. Are there any other benefits of using DMS? What proggy would I need to dump the disks?

Arrow DMS is buggy - avoid!

Do NOT use DMS! It is a buggy piece of crap. About 1% of the time it creates DMS files that it thinks are OK but which you can never unpack correctly.

It sounds like some of the disks you are trying to use are faulty or have copy protection on them. All cracked games should read fine with a standard AmigaDos reading utility (Tracktool, TransADF, ADF-Blitzer, DiskWiz, DIC, Disk2File). If they don't, they have disk errors or copy protection.

TransADF isn't a bad program as it can create ADZ/ZIP archives on the fly meaning less to transfer. If you have lots of memory or a hard drive it's best just to make ADF's and LHA/LZX them - they will give better compression than anything.

Edit: Probably the safest program to use is DIC by Bert Jahn, available in the WHDLoad package. It will report any errors with any headers on all tracks. Some programs like DiskWiz (by me) ignore certain errors so they can read data from a slightly dodgy disk (and some protected games like Plutos, World Games etc) but if you want 100% copies of the disks I would get DIC.

Cheers for that.

All the games I`m trying to dump are uncracked originals so thats probubly why some failed to dump.

I`ll give that DIC thing, would be good to know if my disks are boned

I second the recommendation to use "TransADF".

Some originals have their own special format/loader and if dumped to ADF, will fail spectacularly.

Might I suggest contacting Fiath here on EAB, or make a post in the "CAPS" forum here with a list of what you have.

Caps have special software which can "Image" just about ANY game there is.... then once you send the Image to Caps, you will get an IPF back, which WinUAE will recognise.

Now some time has passed, what is considered the best free ADF writer/extracter?

Currently got ADFBlitzer 2.1 fom Aminet (not sure if that is the latest version). As I intend to ADF my games collection only once, I want to make sure I get it done correctly. And don't find that certain disks weren't properely converted and unable to redo them again due to floppy failure in the future.

Got TransADF v4.0.46 (if that's the latest version available) and using TransADF-GUI v1.2

Made ADF files for Future Wars, and in the file section just typed named, e.g. Future Wars 1of2

As I didn't include the file extension, nothing is automatically added, so newb question time. How do I tell if the files are compressed ADF or I can safely add .adf on file name?

All three parts of TransADF (RT and lite) are in C:

If the file is 880kB in size it is not compressed.
