Yeah, in the same way my PC could if it was attached to special disk mastering hardware and had the right software (which doesn't exist.).

All the details you need are available publically, and if any doubt feel free to ask...
Having suitable hardware would help though
Alternatively, you can just build an fdc emulator and use the images as is without writing back to a disk. Given that 3.5 disks are getting increasingly difficult to get hold of at a reasonable price and their manufacturing will stop - the latter solution is more viable as a future proof project.

At the risk of drifting off further into off-topic, and purely out of curiosity, what does constitute suitable hardware then? Keep in mind I was only assuming and guessing according to what I've seen and heard at some point, somewhere.

you are right. i should behave like that
what i really dont get, is the lack of any new material. its been demanded many times. ppl would be glad about some new shots of whatever they have done; well maybe gunnar with his girl on the beach would suffice, i bet.
but nada. does this strategy makes any sence ?

The board specifications, completed as design, are now:
NEW:
-Big Performance Plus: 2 independent 64bit busses with symmetrical
256MB CHIP and 256MB FAST DDR2 memory, both clocked with FPGA speed
-68060 on CPU-card via PCI (optionally local SRAM)
-Altera Cyclone 3 FPGA with interal SRAM for 3d texturemapper speed-up

-DVI-output for flatscreens
-usb1.1 for mouse/keyboard

MAINTAINED:
-2x dma-capable IDE
-VGA output (with integrated scandoubler)
-15kHz Video Out
-floppy connector, supporting Amiga-diskettes
-parallel and serial
-ps2-connector for AMIGA-keyboard or PC ps2-keyboard (autodetect)

sorry, but feel the need for another *bump*:

Gunnar von Boehn:

The mainboard will have
a) 256MB Chipmem (64bit)
b) 256MB Fastmem (64bit)

The SuperAGA Chipset will use the Chipmem always as chipmem.
The 070 will use the Fastmem as Fastmem.

Each CPU card (PPC/Coldfire/or 68060) should have local fastmem on board. (Just like all the good AmigaTurbo card did have.)

Local memory on the CPU Card will of course have lower acess latency for the CPU than the fast memory on the mainbaord.

Because of this the Fast-memory bank be "turned" into chip-memory (with a switch) when you add a CPU-Card.

So if you have a CPU Card.
A good setup is to have whatever amount the CPU card has a fastmemory as fast memory and use the on board memory as 128bit wide, 512MB chipmemory.

If the CPU card has 2nd level cache.
- The PowerPC cards have 2nd level cache.
- The Coldfire V5 has 2nd level cache.
- And a 68060 card could be designed to have e.g. 1-2MB SRAM as 2nd level cache.

So if the card have 2nd level cache then the latency to the main board memory is less of a factor.
With we selfmade the second level cache, as like on a 68060 card, then we can put the latency into account.
We could do things like speculative prefetching memory lines early ahead into the 2nd level cache. This would help a lot on hiding the latency.

A higher clocked 68060 with few MB of 2nd level would be very powerful compared to original classic 68k systems.

Of course when our 070 design develops as we hope it does then the systems does not need a CPU card at all.

Seperating the (optional) CPU from the Board has the advantage that the same board can be used for customer which want the baord with 070 or which prefer their board with 060. This will lower the cost of the system for everybody.

Cheers

Our dear Gunnar is busy telling everyone how "simple and easy" everything is. That of course takes a lot of time which explains why there are no news. But at least our dear Gunnar produces a lot of hot air, that's better than nothing, isn't it?

I have some clothes to dry, so that indeed might come in handy
No really, I've read the specifications and like it seems nothing of these new parts have been done yet. What OS are they planning to use?

They're planning on using AmigaOS 3.9 for the '060 and yet-to-be-designed '070. They might even get it to run OS4 for Classics using a Sonnet Crescendo accelerator card from the world of Macs.

Regarding the summer's end deadline, they had to redesign the motherboard to knock $130 USD off of the end-user price. That pushed the deadline back to early November. The good news is that it won't need a new board design for the consumer version later on, and it will be easier to test the not-yet-designed 68070 core by removing the 68060 or PPC-based accelerator from the PCI slot.

Missing deadlines in the World of Amiga(tm) is traditional & lets face it the 'team' making it have lots of mastication yet to do considering the enormity of what they've got to gobble down...

...I'm certainly interested to see what's finally revealed & if I never get my sweaty hands on it myself I hope to see some revealing videos in due course.

Anticipation's often part of the excitement.
