is Nintendo64 worth getting these days?
Got that retro gaming itch again and bought Mega Drive (had sold it in 1999) to play Sensible Soccer and other games. Was thinking about rekindling my Saturn and Dreamcast memories and purchase these systems too, but my experience with dying cd drives tell me to stay away from 15 year old consoles based on this media (imagine the quality of the laser after years of swap tricks, using stratched cheapo cd's), hence my inclination towards catridge using systems. Frankly, I don't care about cinematic intros, cut scenes, nor I miss full motion video crapware. Never owned N64, played it briefly in 1997 and loved its video quality compared to grainy PSX's and Saturn's graphics.
Anyone jumping on N64 bandwagon lately? |

I keep seeing them crop up here or Amibay and at Car Boot sales, very tempted every time especially when I see them being sold with Lylatwars, Golden Eye, Waverace, Mario Kart. Its very tempting indeed.
But then even on my el-lamo media centre (AMD 64 3700+/GF 7800GT) emulation is pretty much perfect and thats on my big screen TV so I pass each time. The only game that still sucks under emulation for me is Golden Eye, so maybe its worth it one day for me to play that again I have such fond memories of 4 player DM Oh and the 4 player DM on Duke 64 (Sorry I was too poor for a PC so played it on N64) Steve. I bought an N64 purely for Golden Eye. Have you seen the remake there doing for the wii complete with limited Golden Controller?

N64 has no Scart output as standard and has crap controllers - other than those two things that annoy me about the machine it's got some good games, Doom64 and Ridge Racer 64 are two of my fav's - but an old Xbox, soft modded is 10 times better...

There is a mouse-mod for Golden Eye if you run it in emu so that makes it more worth it IMHO to emulate it.
I had an N64 with a Z64 v3 a couple of years ago, feel bad I sold it it was a sweet setup, moded to run roms off harddrive. The real hardware is a more satisfying experience but if I run the real thing it is going to be modded only and it will be connected to a 1084 monitor because non HD stuff on HD LCD looks like shit besides a proper RGB monitor. |

Funny I could have sworn my N64 is connected via Scart, but no the quality is not amazing and the controller could be worse, could a lot bette as well, still better than the one for the dreamcast.
Softmod Xbox is a lovely retro machine though for Mame in HD . Link for the controller steve http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20013325-1.html |

I would say out of the dreamcast and saturn you mention that the n64 should be dirt cheap.
Cracking library of games from the Zeldas to mario but not many third party published games. Emulation of the system is very good tho. |

Modern LCD TV's (especially large ones) make the real N64 graphics look like crap.
The games looked so much better on good old CRT TV's. |

My brother wanted a N64 when it was released and (as he wanted money to go out and party etc.) it eventually became mine. Many classic games for it, which include (deep breath): Goldeneye Perfect Dark (like Goldeneye, with slightly better GFX) Turok 2 (I have all of the N64 ones, and the 2nd is the best in my opinion) Command & Conquer (the first(?) 3D version of the original game, plus a few extra levels) Mario Kart 64 Super Mario 64 Blast Corps Star Wars: Rogue Leader 1 F-Zero Lylat Wars (aka Starwing outside the UK) Zelda: Majora's Mask Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and a few others I can't remember right now. I still have a CRT TV, so can't comment on how the GFX look on modern LCD/plasma/HD projectors. The controller is fine, in my opinion, but then I have 15 games consoles (mostly Sega & Nintendo) including handhelds and am used to adapting to different controllers Edit: If you go for the real hardware, make sure it has the 1MB memory expansion in the front slot. Some games (e.g. both Zelda games, Perfect Dark and Command & Conquer) use the extra memory to enhance the screen resolution and or other aspects of the game (better textures etc.). Perfect Dark is a good game, I like PilotWings 64 and Excitebike 64 also... the controller is still one of the worst game system controllers I have ever used but then again I thought the Gamecube Controller was pretty awful as well.
Yes - the Dreamcast Controller was just as bad! |

I think the N64 controller is really good myself. Better than the Gamecube one. For me, at least.
