Shadow of the Beast PC Engine longplay
Just did a longplay of the PC Engine version of SOTB. Decent version but as you'll see in the video, they cut the difficulty level drastically.
[ Show youtube player ] [ Show youtube player ] [ Show youtube player ] Youtube really raped this one though, the quality is very bad. Please do this if you watch it - right click the video and select "low quality". I think it looks better that way (a lot of old game vids do in my opinion, gets rid of that blurriness). |

Thanks for the links laffer, I never got to see this version. Looks like they added some into screen graphics. The must of cut the difficulty because they had some whiners on the Amiga version.

You have me excited to play this version now. I'll have to track down a PC Engine emulator for OS X and Shadow of the Beast.

Yeah it's a good version. I like the music.
Another thing.. the video is a little choppy here and there as the emulator does not have a recording function.. so I had to use FRAPS. And this PC sucks |

Aaah, best Beast version ever!! Every real Duo/Magic Engine fan should try it. The difficulty level is well balanced, the CD soundtrack is awesome.

Still got extremely dull, poorly animated enemies I see!
I think I prefer the look of the Amiga version, but saying that the youtube vid looks reeeeally compressed and shitty. |

I'm glad you took up my suggestion to do this one.
The game is done by Davy Jones' DMA Designs, the people behind Blood Money, Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto, one of the reasons it is very polished no doubt. The music was done by Tim Wright (of SotB2 fame) under his Cold Storage brand. One thing that stands out, the music doesnt change in BOSS fights as it does with the Amiga version. This change of tempo is almost a requirement these days when entering a dangerous phase of a game. |

I noticed there is no light to pickup to enter the castle and finall boss can throw rocks instead of squishing you with his club.

Yeah just found that out.
It's the same thing with Mednafen too, no avi output. Btw, in MAME there's an option to dump to MNG, does anybody know how to play them? |

i see that there are parts which i simply either see not (because i was already dead) or that i saw but never passed, that watched from your long ply shows a very neat design, strategy wise.
for instance, the red dragon near the endo of the first part, blowing blue flames while green spears come out of the floor: you have to get back every 4 or 5 punches, but you have no idea exactly what distance take IF NOT for tht little flame brazier on the background that you normally do not see... i don't think it's a hard game, neither it was the amiga version: just it require an amazing (to me) concentration and planning to beat it. |

Yeah and memorization. It's not that hard once you've got it down but it takes some practice.

Anyone know where I got the idea that the music for this game was produced by Tim Wright under his Cold Storage Brand??
Is it in the credits? (I cannot remember how to mount MP3 + ISO cue files for emulation so I cannot be bothered to look) It's just the music from this game is identical to the music on the earlier FM-Towns version which says the music was Arranged and recorded by "Chris Howlett and Ian Henderson". |

Tim Wright did not do the music for this game. (I asked him and he has no memory of it)
Both the FM-Towns version and the PC Engine version are credited to DC Productions Ltd. which included Chris Howlett and Ian Henderson |
