Can I use this to connect a CD-ROM drive?
Probably a stupid question, but could I use this PCMCIA to IDE adapter (or other one) to connect a laptop CD-ROM drive to my Amiga 1200 (without having to program new drivers preferably :P)?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PCMCIA-TO-IDE-...d=p3286.c0.m14 Either way, would it be possible if I actually coded drivers for it? |

I dunno if it could work but why don't you go for it anyway? It's only 5$
I used to have this PCMCIA to IDE controller (and IIRC I only used the IDEfix software for it to work). I'm very tempted just to get one to try just for the fun of it |

If I bought all PCMCIA cards I thought I might do something with them on the Amiga, I'd go bankrupt...
For example, I'm looking at an external PCMCIA connected DVD-RW drive right now... |

I also bought one. I'm just trying to figure out how to connect an ATAPI drive to this thing. I can't find suitable adapters (at least ones which provide power to the drive).
Edit: Finally found one, but it's a little expensive... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/44-pin-laptop-...3286.m63.l1177 Last edited by BlueAchenar; 29 September 2008 at 12:54. |

It'll have to arrive first. And I still have to setup and install a CF hard drive and 3.1 ROMs in the Amiga. Might take a while...
It'd be great if it worked (and cheap). I certainly think the hardware is capable if the card is really PCMCIA v2.1 16-bit. I just don't know about the software... If someone finds a cheap JAE (Slimline) to 44-pin IDE connector adapter which uses the IDE power lines please let me know. |

I've found an old Epson laptop CD with regular 44 pins IDE. I will grab it and tell you how it goes.

I would be amazed if it worked.
What drivers are you going to use? I find it hard to believe that IDEFix97 has PCMCIA drivers?!? |

If I knew for sure this would work, I wouldn't have asked. Then again, not knowing will be more fun when I finally get to try it.

I think you stand a chance of getting it working using the driver from the Alfa Data CD1200 installation disk
On that (non booting) disk you'll find two device drivers in /devs. "tandemat_pcmcia.device" "tandemcd_pcmcia.device" Just like a CF card adapter, the Alfa Data CD1200 and your board will effectively be no more than wires. The software is key here. I suspect you'll need one of those two device drivers for IDE over the PCMCIA port and use it with IDEFix97 for ATAPI support via that device driver. The more research I do the more it is looking likely that you will be able to get this interface to work.
The drivers on the Alfa CD1200 disk (above) are the last version (41.6) and are the same drivers as for the Tandem Zorro II IDE card. I wonder if these devices are similar, hardware & driver wise, to the IDE interface on the X-Surf card? I look forward to seeing if you have any success. |

Well, mine still hasn't arrived. Programming the drivers will be fun also if I get the time to do it.

The adapter finally arrived and it worked on my laptop for about 15 minutes before dying on me... excellent quality
The good news is I've finally installed a CF hard drive on my Amiga and I'm still trying to get my CF PCMCIA reader to work (driver installation) since the tcp/ip stack for my wireless card takes too much ram. Also, my RGB to s-video adapter died on me and I have to fix it. I'll send this card back for a replacement and then I'll try to make it work. |
