Darn. I thought I read somewhere that the A2000 can use Kickstart 3.1 though. I'm guessing that you need some kind of adapter board or is 3.1 only one chip?

Is it worth putting 3.1 in an Amiga 2000? I'm looking for maximum compatibility for games. 3.1 sounds like it's only really useful for AGA stuff.
I'm almost wondering if I should get a 1.2 rom and put that in instead? Maybe get a dual kickstart switcher with 1.2 and 1.3? Last edited by Tempest 2084; 22 August 2012 at 19:43. |

Actually the more I think about it, having a dual switch with 1.3 and 3.1 would give me the ability to easily switch into PAL mode when needed which is probably more useful than worrying about the handful of games that require 1.2. Maybe using 3.1 for every day gaming (switching from NTSC to PAL as needed) and using 1.3 for those stubborn games that refuse to work would be the more logical way to go.

If you install kickstart 2 or higher, you can use skick to soft kick any kickstart you like. Maybe you dont need a physical rom swicher.
You have a nice machine there, personally i would fit a v2 rom or better, a 68010 and whdload everything. |

I talked it over with a friend, and I think I may just make myself an NTSC/PAL switch and stick with 1.3. I assume that's easy enough to make?
I actually already have a A1200 with WHDLoad, this machine is for playing older games on their original hardware (I plan on making and using floppies in it). That and because I find the big box Amigas sexy whereas my A1200 looks like an over-glorified keyboard. |

Yes, you can use a 3.1 ROM in your A2000. You just need to get the correct ROM but it depends on what your intended use is. OS 3.1 has some nice improvements over earlier versions and if you ever want to run OS3.5/3.9 you will need it for sure!
Softkicking usually does not work as well as a ROM switcher because the Kickstart is patched to run in fast memory. The only reliable way to relocate Kickstart is with an MMU or custom map ROM hardware which some accelerators may have. But a ROM switcher is a pretty reliable low cost option for the job.
