Question Phase 5 Blizzard 1230 IV FPU?

Hi! Can I use a 33MHz PGA FPU with this accelerator? Thanks in advance!

P.S. Does someone happen to have the instruction manual to this accelerator? Thanks!

Yes.

Depending on the crystal (and CPU speed), it's a good idea placing a heatsink over it.

I don't recommend the use of a 33MHz unit on a 50MHz board. Be warned.

It's good to remember that most applications don't even use the FPU so if it's not being used (much) then you won't get any problems with sticking a slower rated chip in there

When you press "2", the FPU is also disabled?

Hi witchmaster,

You can download the instruction manual (English or German) from here as a PDF:
http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/blizzard1230mk4
and some SCSI-Tools disks are available there too!

FPU is used only by ray-tracing programs and (believe!) lha. So to check if a FPU is working OK, just compress or decompress a file.

I find it very unlikely that an FPU would speed up LHA, or any other (de)compression for that matter. (De)compression is integer arithmetic, AFAIK

Most (all?) ray-tracing programs should benefit from an FPU, though - rkauer is right about that!

It's a common misconception that the FPU cannot do integer operations...

@Andymiga: just use any version of lha to decompress a file on a CLI window and you will be surprised. Just read the header when the decompression starts: if you have a FPU on the Amiga, the app will use it.

Well actually can't test it myself (my Blizzard has no 68882, at least not yet) but I do believe you. Thanks for correcting me!
