You can make a loopback adapter, connect rx to tx and start up a terminal program.

Type in some stuff and you should have everything echoed back to you.

Another option is to get a null modem cable, connect that between the amiga and another computer with rs232. Start terminal programs on both sides, set the port parameters the same way on both ends and start hitting the keys on both sides.

Yet another option is to plug in a modem, start up a terminal program and start hitting letters.

And another way is to use the Advanced Amiga Analyzer (look up the Amiga Hardware website). There is also a software disk for this which can be used without the hardware.

The hardware will also show the voltage levels on some of the pins, which are required for some devices. Instead of that hardware, you could very carefully use a multimeter (if you have experience) or an external serial device which requires that power. The amiga owners manual should say which voltage is expected on which pins.
