WinUAE-X v8 IPF support?
The author of WinUAE-X is doing his 8th and last work on WinUAE-X.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=498061 Is there the slightest chance that SPS would allow him to add IPF support? He would have to create an X-box DLL. |

If SPS cannot release the source to XPort, perhaps he can advise them how to use the XDK (Xbox development kit) to generate a X-box 'dll' that he can use in the next WinUAE-X?

Unfortunately, to create a XBox DLL, we need an XBox development kit. The library is C++, and for this reason, you need a real kit to do it (because of the extensions, etc.)

Great, but *we* need access to one. If it is not just a recompile, we also need the time to do it. There are some other issues too IIRC.

umm don't just just need the XBOX XDK and then compile it?
Of course a devkit would help for testing it, but if you compile it using the XDK and release it you'll soon have thousands of beta testers telling you if there's something wrong |

When I say devkit, I mean the XDK. If the only way to get access to a LEGAL copy of the XDK is with a devkit, then they might as well be the same thing. There is *no way* we will use XDK's floating around the net. Apart from anything else, it is just asking for trouble.
Also, considering the subject matter, it may be that using a legal devkit could be asking for trouble considering that we may very well need to work with Microsoft on game preservation in the future, it is probably not a good idea to set of on the wrong foot... I don't know the answer to this. I guess we would have to ask them. The point is, that we did seriously consider supporting it. I think we even talked to XPort about it. You can't say we didn't try to solve the issue! It's just seems a bit risky when we want to say legal. |

Then you do not have to worry about legality.. ALl you need is to get the appropriate source that needs compiling out to the Xbox community, and let them "accidentally" compile it. |

Since ie developed the thing, ultimately, it came from us. It wouldn't really matter how it got out.
I was hoping (stupidly it seems) that things like the EUCD and DMCA would be thought of as rather a bad idea and be scrapped. Well, actually, I have never thought that. But I did think they would remove the stupid clauses about communication of information (which are almost human rights infringements)... I did think they would add excemptions that specifically allowed preservation institutions to work in an open manner... Maybe one day. We will do it eventually, but right now, the legal guidance is on these issues is as clear as mud. |
