I think that You can compare both 1.03 version:

- v1.03: Renegade/Bitmap bros release. Buggy, copy-protected, uses MFM savegame disk.
- v1.03: Renegade/Bitmap bros release. Not copy-protected, not buggy, uses DOS tracks
for savegames (much better).

It must same version for me, only first is protected, second is not protected.
Especially differences in data files. From my memory some data files contains 68k code too.

Yes, this code is level code that ACL can't handle. This is not protection code.

I think that I was referring MFM save format as "buggy", not the game. I mean why creating a special MFM save format when the game itself uses RN PDOS standard 11-track which also has save option? Maybe to protect savegames from copying... That would look very much like the Bitmaps, as they make you pay for saving your game (another genius idea!)

I dont think. For me MFM saves was part of Cadaver protection.
Some games (f.e Silmarils games) stored info about legal or illegal copy inside save file.
For me Cadaver saves stored siimilar info too.
You can easy enough edit saves stored on normal DOS disks.
But You can't easy edit saves stored on MFM disks.
I perhaps was blocked on 4th Cadaver level.
I was young enough, then even I dont think that it can be any kind of protection.
But I remember one thing.
Disk drive LED was turned on.
Then something must use disk drive.
Now I think that it must be active by any RNC Copylock.

Funny thing is that i have at least twice the original game:
- the version from my Advantage pack which came with my A500Plus in 1991
- the boxed version i got later.
This shows that honest people may be interested in cracking protections.
Chances are that i will never succeed in finishing the game in its original form.
