Those old computer mags.
I got a ton of old amiga computer magazines in my attic which is always great fun to read through from time to time just for the nostalgia trip. But if I were to write an amiga-related article on the internet that requires the including of a scanned article/brief-text from one of those magazines, will it be permittable? Or are there copyright laws still in effect eventhough the magazine is now longer active?
Or to twist it a bit further: If I were to put up a scanned PDF-file of lets say the number 10 issue of a 1988 edition Amiga Computer Magazine (or similar) on the internet, will I raise hell about it? Or are such magazines "freeware" by now? |

Most of the Amiga magazines are now all out of print including back issues. I cannot imagine they could care less.... for the moment. Should the retro-scene become even bigger than it is now I can see them "selling" back issues in PDF format...

To be honest, I'd like that, if the price was reasonable and the PDFs weren't just scanned jpgs but real "text as text"-pages. But the efford would be too great, I guess - even if they didn't layout the pages "by hand" back then in the 1980s but used software to do that, it'll hardly have an "export to PDF"-function. And to rebuild the mags out of scanned old issues - we know what kind of work that is!

www.zzap64.co.uk has DVDs of Amiga Power, ACE and The Games Machine (some Amiga content in the last two).
The magazines aren't classified as freeware - but most publishers of that day don't exist any more, so generally there doesn't seem to be any action taken against scan sites. However NEWSFIELD publishing is still very much alive and well and they have previously requested scans of COMMODORE FORMAT, YOUR SINCLAIR and NINTENDO SUPERPLAY to be removed from sale and online distribution. I know that some of the editors/contributors of Amiga Power (and other mags from the 80s/90s) are still active on the zzap64.co.uk forums, so you may want to try tracking them down and asking their permission (just out of courtesy, if nothing else). I am the one who is running the Amiga Reviews site. When I started it six years ago, I tried to contact the authors of the original reviews verifying their opinion about the initiative. I only managed to trace a few of them - mainly people who have worked for Zzap! and a freelance journalist. They had no objections about it.
Since then, I assume the original author has no problems with the HTML-ised review as long his/her name is mentioned. Selling/publishing scans or PDFs on a site is another matter, it appears. It seems Future Publishing (publisher of Amiga Format, Amiga Power, Amiga Shopper) ordered site zzap64.co.uk to withdraw their Amiga Format scans from the site-shop. |
