If you connect both to a router, use a normal crossed cable.

If directly connected, use a straight cable.

Right-click+Share a folder on the XP. Usually ends up in 'WORKGROUP'. No idea if there's a problem finding the group on Amiga.

Don't think you have to run a networking guide, but you should give the PC a name on the network. On XP this is known as "\\name" and you can open that in Explorer for direct access to the named computer. Haven't set it up on my A1200 yet so I don't know if you can access it by name there.

But each computer has a non-internet (LAN) IP address (either assigned or fixed). That should at least do the trick.

I use FTP between my PC and Amiga.

The dream set up would be being able to access the PC drives as Icons from Workbench.

IIRC SAMBA is the solution here, however I have never given it the time needed for installation and configuration.

You can use either SMBFS or SMB-Handler to connect to a shared drive.

I think Amigakit's Easynet can search for computers with shared drives. This is what comes next to "network neighbourhood". But if you already know the name of the computer and the drive, then you don't need it.

Why not use the ami-pc software its pre installed on classic WB.

I bought that ages ago with a parallel cable network kit, IIRC sets an icon/drive on your workbench and you can browse the PC drives.

(Sorry for being vague as I have not used if for 4 years)

Steve.
edit:
Thinking about it I think that only worked witn win98/me so might be no good for you!

FTP here also. You can use a program called FTPmount to access the server like a directory (and you get a WB icon too).

It works with XP using a small command line program to unlock the parallel port. No, I don't remember where to find it, nor the name of the app.

You're probably thinking of UserPort. It works with Paradise (another great parallel port transfer program) but personally I never managed to get ami2pc working under XP.
