Castlevania (Amiga 500)

Was this game ever commercially released? (as in - a box, manual, retail stuff etc)

Real or hackjob conversion of the PC version with junk added?

Yes, it is real. I have seen the real thing before, and it broke my heart to not be able to purchase it. On the rare occasion when an original surfaces on ebay, expect at least a $50-60 price tag for the privilege...

Any boxshots? Im not talking about the general release PC version though.. (PC/Amiga/Commodore) cause I have that.. looks the same as the other releases (silver box, same art) Im talking about the one that was "licenced" by Konami to "Novatrade" for conversion

Actually, no...not at the moment. When I saw it last time on ebay, it was in a shot that grouped a whole bunch of games in one shitty picture...you could tell which one it was (which was, if I recall correctly, the silver Konami design like the NES version). And I think I have some magazine ads that show it as being released for the Amiga. Those I can go dig up (US magazines) and try to get scanned.

I can certainly understand your wanting to see this. While I still believe it was released on the Amiga officially, a thorough search for such proof on the net turns up nothing but pages that discuss the fact that there is an Amiga version, or screenshots. But no adverts or cover art. It can leave one suspicious. Personally, I doubt if any hacker would go to that much trouble to make a fake. Typically, they'll create a title screen in DPaint and create a fake sequel (ie, Buck Rogers, Bandit Kings of Ancient China II). But I believe its obscurity lies in the fact that it was a US game. The curious elements are 1) why wasn't the game published in the Amiga-friendly European market?, 2) Why is the game not on the C64/Speccy/Amstrad/Atari ST, but is on the NES and Amiga. This doesn't sound normal to me.

Add this to the fact that the screen I saw the box on, it was in a pile and could have possibly been the NES version mixed in a pile of Amiga games. A magazine advertisement or a listing in a Konami catalog will bring this more to a head, but in the meantime...you have left me in doubt!

Do find and scan those magazine ads, if you can.

For info on the general PC port(Amiga 500, Commodore, IBM), look here - there is a box scan.

Yeah, I'd seen that (although it only discusses the PC version - a version I'd never bother with anyhow). The (small) boxscan looks like the Nintendo version (right down to the NES seal of approval sticker in the bottom-right corner), so it's probably the NES cover and not PC.

Well, not yet. I had planned on hunting for that this weekend, but I ended up having to play (way out of town) with the band, so that wasted basically my whole weekend and everything I'd planned on doing. I've put a string on my finger (not literally!) to remember to look tonight for said ad and if I find it, I will scan and post it.

Well, let's not forget about Metal Gear too... Akira once showed me an ad with screenshots of an Amiga version, as we all know, this one wasn't ever published. (Yeah, I know the difference is that Castlevania indeed exists and Metal Gear never showed its face even in a pirated disk )

I did go through a pile of US Amiga mags this weekend, but haven't turned up said ad yet. Still looking...my bathroom has a mountain of these mags for me to look through while doing other business.

Eek

your BATHROOM?

I assume you would also have a shower in your bathroom every day, am I guessing right? And this humidity is gonna make the magazines crimpy, damp and musty after a short while. Eeeek! :disgusted

You would think that, but I have a very nice little cubby closet in there that is for storing towels and such. It has way more shelving space than a single bedroom apartment needs (for towels, anyway), so I use most of it for magazines. It has a door and keeps any humidity from the mags.
