I'm afraid to say it, but it looks like your Amiga has damaged it. (What Amiga model was it?) "DF1:BAD" indicates that the drive isn't detected, not the disk. Does your external drive port work O.K in the 500? Does the drive try to read the disks? Do you hear the drive clicking? (motor stepping) Do you hear the drive spin up? Does the read/write led light up at all or is permanently on? Try switching the drive off/on (the switch at the rear marked 0/1). Try with commercial disks. I tested with a Workbench disk and a Coverdisk. Sometimes disks written on another Amiga wont read if the other Amigas drive is out of alignment (just a thought) |

Here is a video of me starting up workbench two times (sorry about my stuffed nose...)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4lyuvs78kg...5_red.m4v?dl=0 You can see that the drive is standby clicking (good). The read/write light goes on and off (good). The drive spins up (good). But it speeds up at the same time as the gotek is working (the green light). So I suspect that the drive is acting a bit like it is DF0...? (Check the video) Never mind the "sewing machine" comparison, but the sound comes from the drive speeding up with no disk in it. All I did was carefully connect the drive to the external port drive, with the power off. It is an Amiga 500 with a gotek drive (as seen in the video). :/ |

There are two switches on your Amiga. Are one of those a boot selector switch? Wondering if something's fishy there (shorted?)

The red one will make it start in kickstart 2.0, at least it says so on the screen, and the other one will switch on expanded 512k memory.
I also have another Amiga 500 with no expansions, but the external drive does work with that one either. |

Have you tried different settings on the "A O B" switch?

I did, but only with soft reset. I noticed also that the 0/1 switch does not turn off/on the drive unless you do a hard reset in between. I'll try some more switching, but I no not know what the A O B switch does. Also I am afraid that I will destroy anything if I start fooling around with it. Should I turn off the power for all changes I do?

So it seems to work with the rom switched to 2.0. That is good in a way. It explains why it did not work on my non-modded Amiga 500. How do I make it work with my vanilla Amiga 500? :/

Well, that's good news
The A O B switch is A for anti virus O for off B for blitz copier Always use the switches or plug the drive in with the Amiga off. |

Ok, thanks!
Is the drive supposed to work with ROM 1.3 (Basic Amiga 500)? |

I would think so. I can't remember if I ever used it though, (I'm not a fan of 1.3).
You need to verify that the external drive port works on the 1.3 Amiga. Did you buy the adapter for the external port? |

The adapter is on its way, but not here yet.

How much memory have you in the 1.3 Amiga?

The one I am trying on now has a switch for ROM 1.3/2.0 and a switch for RAM 512k or 1mb (512 expansion)
The second Amiga 500 (with red LED btw.) with ROM 1.3 has no extra memory, only 512k. |

Is the Amiga running 1.3/2.0 (drive working with 2.0) using 512 or 1mb of ram?

I just tried that:
the drive works with 1.3 rom if the expanded ram is there too, 1mb. The drive works with 2.0 rom and/or 1mb it seems. |

A shot in the dark, but the only thing I can think of is the power supply of the Vanilla A500 may be unable to power the drive properly?

I am only testing on the modded Amiga right now, but to my surprise it worked with 1.3/512 when I by accident forgot a floppy in the external drive. I can change floppy a few times but then it starts to make choppy sounds and DF1:BAD shows up.
Edit: I have tried 2 different power supplies now also. |

Another peculiar thing is that trying to load Black Crypt does not work while the external drive is connected.
I get the message "this machine does not have enough memory" and then it quits. But without the drive connected Black Crypt loads up fine (with 1mb RAM). This leads me to think that the drive consumes a lot of memory. |

It doesn't consume a lot, but enough that some software will not run.
