If no such pulse appears, then there is no disk in the drive. This is how the drive checks for disk changes.

The programs which switch off the clicking make the head move from track 0 towards track -1 (which does not exist and thus the head is not really moved). Some drives however try to really move the head this way and will damage the head.
Wait!
If (using an anti-click utility) the head doesn't really move from track 0 towards -1, then the small electric pulse is not generated when a disk is inserted (because the head doesn't move any more). So how can the drive detect the disk change?

Because the drive really has a physical switch detecting a disk change. The result is not latched to the output pin though until a track change is done, no matter if it is towards -1. If you're feeling lucky, you could try sticking a pencil into your floppy drive and push down the switch manually and listen to what happens.

Yes -- and it was terrible. Don't wreck a poor A500 if you don't have to.

Can you share what you did? How did you screw the board in place? What form factor was the casing?

It's been quite a long time, but I used a classic horizontal IBM AT case. I can't remember how I fixed the PCB to the case.

The board was fatally damaged when somehow a 12V potential met a thick trace on the board when the case was jostled.

It might have been in 1989 or so. I still have what's left of the MB, though the drive, keyboard, and everything else is long gone.

Ok, so I must make sure the board is insulated properly...

If I have several files (all ILBM pictures) how do I make Visage open the files by just double clicking on their individual icons? I know I can alter the icon information of each file and I should be able to make Visage the default tool for each picture but I just want Visage to sort of adopt this file type - I don't want to have to keep changing icon information each time I create a new file... ?

Ps - I know that I can just open Visage and select the pictures from Visages requester but I don't want to do it this way.

@Peter

I always thought that file associations were done with defIcons. Though maybe that's something that's only included in OS 3.5/3.9?

I always hated that on the Atari ST how you had to do file associations via the destkop.inf or newdesk.inf, depending on if you had 1.x or 2.x+ TOS. Wait, I actually liked that. Still beats the monstrous registry that Windows uses.

I'm using OS3.1 - pretty much a clean install.

I wonder if it is something that 3.1 can actually do or do I need to install another program (from Aminet maybe) to handle this sort of thing...?

A clean 3.1 is very limited. In 3.9 they added Deficons for that purpose.
There is also a clone for 3.5.

For WB3.1 try ClassAction from here:
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/CA36

And if you want to have nice realtime thumbnails try Eastern.
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/eastern
slow but cool

It's been a long time, but I think the Atari ST had it where you'd double click on something, if it wasn't already associated with a program or a default, you'd just select what program you want it associated with, and it'd create an entry in the newdesk.inf / desktop.inf and be there until you deleted that light.

There was a box of condoms inside the trapdoor of my A1200 when I bought it when I was a small kid. Do they come as standard?

It must have been a promotional item. "With the new Commodore Amiga, you will get laid. We are so confident in that, that we'll even provide you with a package of condoms. We want you to think Safe Sex, when you think of Amiga."

In fact DefIcons was developed as a patch for OS 3.1.

In OS 3.5 the possibility was established to add an identification hook to icon.library in a system-friendly way. After that a new DefIcons was written as DefIcons44 which makes use of this new feature of icon.library.
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/DefIcons44

In OS 3.9 they just added DefIcons44 to the OS.

The original DefIcons for OS 3.1 is part of the NewIcons archive.
http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/NewIcons46

The deficons.prefs file of OS 3.9 is still compatible with the DefIcons program from NewIcons. You can even use the OS 3.9 DefIcons prefs editor to add new file types and then use the resulting deficons.prefs file on OS 3.1.

Cheers all.

I am trying to break away from a requester style of opening files in preference of just clicking a file and... it opens - rather like what happens in Classic Workbench and CW is WB3/3.1 based so I can only imagine that CW has some sort of deficons.prefs file running within it's setup maybe.

I do like Class Action but I have CLImaster running and that I think is just as good should I choose to go the requester route.

Another question...

When I install Class Action (including keyfile) I still get prompts to insert volume "progdir" and also "Bin" when clicking on actions.

What assigns do I have to make (and how) to rid myself of these requester's?
