Hi Megamix,

This is a very versatile adapter and takes 1 or 2 CF cards. I have one which will connect to my A1200's external IDE connector, which I normally use for external CD-ROM drive or hard drive.

CF cards can be equal size or dissimilar, and are seen by the Amiga as two drives connected as Master and Slave.

I've got one of those Arrived this morning. If you have a 3.5 inch HDD then thats fine, if it is 2.5" then you need a 44 pin adapter... I think that ebay seller has them as well (its where I bought mine)

I purchased four of these for testing in my IDE controller. The solder job is not high quality, but given the cost, I was happy with the fact that they actually worked at all.

I can't even get just the CFA connector on this board for that price, at any of the distributors in the US, at any quantity.

My external IDE connector is mounted on the left side of my A1200 just behind the PCMCIA socket. It is connected internally to the secondary channel of a 4-way buffered IDE interface, which connects to the motherboard via a 44-way data cable.

The 4-way IDE interface has a 44-pin connector for the primary channel, to which I have my main hard drive connected, and 44-pin and 40-pin connectors for the secondary channel, and I have my external connector connected to tyhe 40-pin connector.

My external devices require an external power source (I use an old AT PSU).

My A1200 has IDEfix installed. I can upload it to the Zone for you if you wish to try it.

If you have an A1200 or A600 then this is not the right type of adapter to get, you should either get one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=290340147407

As they do not need a cable and just plug straight into the motherboard. However they are not compatible (due to clearance) with some expansions so you might want to get one of these :

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10310

If you have an A4000 you should REALLY get one of these

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10311

They make the CF card accessible without taking the box to bits to get at it.

So i guess these are ok for Amiga's? For some reason i always thought you needed a CF adapter that was specifically designed for Amiga hardware... but i suppose the basic IDE bus is pretty much the same in any system?

Yep. AFAIK, there are no specific types for Amiga, or any other platform.

Thats great to hear! so now i can get a cheap CF adapter for around £3 and then get a 4gb Kingston CF card for around £8 - Thats a total of just £11 compared to other places that sell these kits for the Amiga at around £20+ (i already have short IDE ribbons too )

Hey, wait! CF cards are a different matter. Although there are no specific recommendations regarding their suitability, EAB user experience indicates that SanDisk cards are the most compatible with Amigas, both in CF-IDE and CF-PCMCIA adapters.

So it could be worth getting a 4GB Sandisk instead, even if it costs a little more.

I thought the compatibility with CF cards was limited to PCMCIA adapters but I could be wrong.

Yes the Amiga (or rather the drivers) don't seem to like CF cards which identify themselves as "removable" IDE devices. Some SAN DISK cards you can convert to non removable in software using an x86 PC with onboard IDE.

I think the 4gb Kingston CF cards are fine with A1200's as there is a seller on ebay called "ChaoticJelly" who sell's them as part of a kit for the A600/1200... but i could try a Sandisk just to be perfectly safe

I will be replacing my 2.5" hard drive with a CF card via IDE-CF adapter.... and then fill it up with WHDload goodness I will use a PCMCIA-CF adapter for transferring files from my PC to the A1200. I will also probably have to disable my Magnum board when transferring files as i'm pretty sure the PCMCIA port on A1200's does not work with more than 4mb ram?

Just remember to set your MAXTRANSFER size correctly for IDE devices when you prep your card if you have not done it for a while or everything will seem to work and then you will loose data.

I will have to look into that... thanks for the tip! Nothing more annoying than setting everything up perfectly just for it to backfire!
