CD32 Emulation
Ok ..I'm almost ready to try CD32 emulation on my A1200
I have fitted a 4xEIDE'99 device ..and brought the secondary IDE to the outside world ..so that I can connect a CD rom ..I willl mount in a case with its own psu .. The audio out from the drive is also made available via 2x phono connectors. It is working and the drivers appear to be installed. All this was just so I could emulate CD32. My next question is .. What are my options ? The best software to use and where to obtain it ? rgds VS |

Well unless I'm completely mistaken, without AKIKO you can't emulate fully a CD32. but there should be solutions for programs using the OS and cd.device.

The IDEfix package has a CD32 "emulator". I do not know how well it works, nor do I know if this is the best solution.

earok had luck with those CD simulation tools. Of course, some titles won't work, but you're not missing much (except the recent CD audio enhanced games I released last year).
Iconic titles like Simon/Simon 2, BASS, Microcosm... can work, cos they're not banging the hardware. Some CD32 titles won't work (Chuck Rock, Lotus) but they're just ECS versions dumped on CD so it's not really useful. |

I sort of expected the lack of AKIKO would mean less than 100% compatibiliy but was hoping for a close approximation.
I assume these emulation tools are not free ...but can anyone advise or provide links to them ? Like everything Amiga related I'm a newb ..so have to ask to gain knowledge. cheers VS |

Some CD32 games will run if you execute from Workbench (Robocod is a good example). They will use cd.device to load and play music.

I think there's only one version of those. Grab them in a lot of CD32 games (sometimes they include them, even if there's a copy in ROM), or CD32 developper kit.
lowlevel provides easy interfacing in games (for CD32 devs. including reading joypads), nonvolatile abstracts gamesaves/loads to/from disk or NVM |

I use squirrel cd32 emu, 3.9 Cachecdfs and atapi.device. Every single CD32 game and disc works 100% perfect.
I posted loads of times, regarding how I have set it up to check for CD32 disc. If it sees one it boots it. Obviously custom CD's with custom assigns will cause problems. |

@Fol try James Pond 3, Chuck Rock, Lotus and tell me if one of them works.
Note that there was a rumor that those worked from hard drive too, and the rumor isn't entirely false. On a IDE drive, FFS 512 bytes per block, first partition, changing CD0 by DH0 in the boot programs enabled Rob norhten IDE drivers and allowed to launch the game. Need a dedicated partition/harddrive, though... |

James Pond 3, Lotus Trilogy, work fine. Dont think I have tried Chuck Rock (not a big fan). However every game I have tried on it works fine, with CDDA too. I have the Original versions and both worked fine when I tried them. It did take me a lot of trial and error to find a working combination (that worked with every disc I tried). Even though Squirrel emu has cd.device, its dummied. If you open in editor, it just points to scsi.device (in my custom setup atapi.device). The good thing about the squirrel emu, it creates files for every disc inserted and remembers your config. It has a hidden menu, you can use to tweak things. You can disable fast ram and enable fast ram. Microcosm always used to crash (Internal Hardware Error) with Fast RAM. With my current setup, it works perfect with Fast RAM and therefore runs smoother. I used to run it from HDD, using SimCD32 (in the devkit). Works fine. |
