20 euro seems fair to me.

When you consider itch.io are selling some of the Pystronik games for under $5, it does make Sam's Journey look very overpriced in comparison.

€20 seems decent to me also really.
Consider this; tonight I took a lady out on a date which was relatively cheap... The bill was £40 for a few hours together. With a game like this you are probably going to get many hours / days of enjoyment so IMHO worth it; and in perspective with the cost of "real life" entertainment, peanuts. |

Again, I clearly said I did not mean "this is too much", because this game has been a lot of work, I just stated the fact that it is quite a steep leap from what modern C64 indie games previously costed.
Comparing to other releases isn't fair. This is what I'd call a proper commercial release, no amateur shit, no semi-pro effort. I just wonder how it will go with the C64 scene in general. It will be a good test. If it does well, and I hope it does, it can set precedence that you can sell a game at this point if you invested the necessary time and skill on it. No recent C64 game has been released with this much quality. DamienD: LOL! comparing to dates isn't fair either haha! I am just wondering how this will work on the scene with how things were so far. |

I don't think your comparison is a good one, let see: "Relatively cheap girl" against "Expensive game". Humm... I also should have to know some details like for example how easy are them and well... the "graphics" too . Last edited by Retrofan; 25 July 2017 at 03:25. |

Yeah maybe not the best example but I'm sure you can understand the point I was trying to make...
€20 is small change given the years of work / enjoyment you'll get. Think of it as say 3 beers, well at least in London |

But the matter is that when people get used to something, introducing a change is not always a smooth transition.
Not everyone shares that logic even though I am sure they drink/piss more than that money in any night out as you clearly denote :P There's some Amiga games that lack in quality severely compared to this yet they sell for as much. Sam's Journey is a good value from wherever you see it, it's just a proper commercial release wit ha proper development cycle and quality justifying its cost. Let's just hope the C64 scene sees it this way. So far it seems that 500 people already preordered a copy in one way or another, so I'd say this is set to be a great success |

500 seems a big success, but for now it's only showing your interest and they put a copy for you on hold for a short time. This "preordering" is no binding order. You will get an e-mail once the game is ready for order.

I haven't preordered because I am not sure I can commit and I think it's unfair to the developers to be saving a copy for someone if they are not going to commit to buy. I hope this move doesn't bite them back on their asses because 3 months is a LONG wait after release to be holding copies for deadbeats. Imagine 50% of those preorderers get cold feet, that's 250 copies you can't sell for 3 months. |

Definatley be interesting to see how the digital download goes at 20 euros.
You can see a ton of effort has gone into it. I dont agree that other releases are "amateur shit" tho. Last edited by smila; 25 July 2017 at 19:19. |

I think you have to be idealistic with what you accept with regards to pricing on a small platform. 20 euros is something I pay for a new PC game these days, and they are massive with sick graphics etc.
But they aim for a market of millions of potential customers. For Amiga and C64 (and other retro platforms) you have to ask yourself? Would I work for years for 500 or 1500 or even 10 000 euros of profit? Thats a week of pay for many of us. Or a couple of months at max sales. Ofcourse I realise in todays Europa, not everyone is as fortunate to have a decent paying job, or even a job at all. But at the end of the day; if you want good quality to keep being released for your retro platform of choice, you need to accept a premium. Take an Aros developer about to get kicked out of his flat a month ago. The community came together and chipped in. You cant use mainstream capital logic to our and similar communities. I'm more than happy to support the creation of these type of games. It is expensive, but the feeling of having a totally new and quite professionally made C64 game to play in 2017 is worth something IMHO

True. I will order the cartridge for sure (you get the digital disk version then too). Instant classic and probably the best C64 platformer ever. Hopefully more GMod2 cartridge games with save support will follow.

I've just received my cartridge versions of Power Glove and Moonspire plus the Disk version of Sleepwalker, and also on the list for a Disk version of Sam's Journey and have pre-ordered Argus, so I guess I like buying semi pro amateur shit, lol
Forgot about the steel case release of Heroes & Cowards I received last week! Last edited by BarryB; 26 July 2017 at 00:06. |
